Description

M. M. LAHUE. LUG STRAP SUPPORT-ER FOR Looms.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 7. 19I6.
50,327, Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
WITNESS: INVENTOR:
WOMWK W y A TTORNE Y.
moses OEI.IL.OWEI;L, massaenu To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that 1, Moses M. 'LAHUE, a citizen of the United 'States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lug-Strap Supporters for Looms, of which the following is a specification. r This invention relates to lug strap supporters'for looms, and consists in the devices and the combinations hereinafter de-' scribed and claimed.
f-The general object of this invention is to support the outer end of the lug strap or sweep'strap at the desired height on 'the picker-stick and thereby to regulate the length and force of the stroke of said stick.
The supporter herein described anddesigned to provide a double cushion for the picker-stick andthereby lessen the shock between said stick and the lug-strapwhen the picker is thrown outward by the incoming shuttle and also when the said stick is suddenly thrown inward by the pull of said strap, and thus to prevent breaking of the filling and lessen. the wear and damage to pickers, picker-sticks, shuttles' and other parts of theloom. Incarrying out my invention I use a housing of rigid material, preferably metallic, as malleable iron, adapted to supportan inner cushion nextthe picker-stick and an outer cushion between the body of the housing and the closed end of the loop which forms the outer member of the lug strap, and between the outer cushion and said closed end of said loop 'I interpose a wearing piece or gib of suitable material as indurated fiber.
The housing is adapted to support the cushions near their ends in such a manner as to allow them to approach each other in their -middle portion when tension is put on the lug-strap either by the outward movement of the picker-stick or by the pull of the picking tappet.
These cushions or shock-absorbers will preferably be made of old or discarded double leather belting such as may be found in textile factories and which otherwise may be regarded as waste, and in shape are represented as an oblong double washer or Specification of Letters Patent; Patented Dec, Application fi ed Octobe 7, 1.9.16. SerialNo. 124,273.

am -front elevation of certain parts of a loom showing the picking mechanism provided with my invention; Fig. 2, a front elevation of parts of the picker-stickfand lug-strap and the improved lug-strap holder; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an elevation of the outer end of the housing detached and without the cushions and gib; F ig. '5, a section on the line 5 5 in Fig. 3, omitting the picker-sticlg except that the gib isin'elevation; Fig. 6, a side elevation of a cushion, the full linessh'owing the outline of the outer cushion and the-- dotted lines showing the variation of theoutline ofthe inner cushion from that of the'outer.
The following named parts of a loom-are in common use/and maybe of any usual construction: e V l 1 r 3 1, indicates a loomside:;2, a" portion'of the breast beam; 3,the lay beam and shuttle box;=4, a picker-stick; 5, its rocker; 6, the rocker stands or out'er endv of the rock shaft of the lay 7 the strap which connects rocker spring '8; 9, the cam-shaft; 10, the

It will be under stood that the closed end of the loop 16 surrounds thepicker-stick in the usual manner.-
denotes the housing of the lug-strap holder; 0, the body thereof provided with holes a a throughwhichthe sides 'orlimbs of: the..loop1'16"pass a a the curved guardswhich prevent lateral or longitudi na'l movement of the shock absorbin cush' ions B B The body of the housing is alike on both the outer and inner faces except as hereinafter stated and is provided with re- *cesses'a a midway between the holes a a at right angles to a line joining the center of said holes. these recesses being to facilitate the yielding of the middle portions of the cushions under pressure, upon the outer cushion B by the gib C and upon the inner and picker-stick being in alinement with ing is provided with an eye a to receive a flexible strap D, as of leather, by which the housing is supported on the picker-stick, as wn F g 2 and sa d st ep D being looped through said eye and seeuredto said stick, as by a bolt d which passes into or through said stick.
The housing A hastwo guides lil'E which project from the outer face of ,the body of said housing and are arranged parallel with each other and are provided with parallel wings e e to receive'the ends of the gib O, and in alinementwith the rec-essesra ia and the free ends of these guides project beyond the :outer ends of the :wings e ,6 far enough to abei-turneddowln overtheends of said gib as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,to retain said gib in position (against the outer face of the outer cushion B. In Figs. .4: and 5,-the,guides are shown as they appearsbefore -"being turned downion the gib.
The housing A with itsguards, a a eye a and guides E E is cast-inone-rpiece, pref.- erably of malleable iron. r
The cushions B B are preferably inade ,of old double belting which has ar slight but suiiicient elasticity to-absorb the shocks caused by the impact of the shuttle and-violent pull of the lug strap on the pickerstick.
The cushions B B maybe precisely alike and of the shape shown in full lines in Fig. 6 and formed by a single die, but the notches Z2 Z) 'n the outer cushionB' serve only to receive the wings e e and are therefore'not needed in the inner cushion B and the straight portions 6. b bet-ween these notches fit the guides E313 between said wings, but as these guides and wings are used only on the outer face :of the housing, the upper and lower edges of the inner cushion may be continuous curves, as indicated partly by dotted lines 6 b in said Fig. 6.
The supporter is suspended as shoavn with its inner cushion against the picker stick and its outer cushion against the gib, the outer lug-strap member passing'through the holes 6 b in the cushions and body :of the housing.
I claim as my invention:
1. A lug-strap supporteritor looms comprising a metallic body, provided with means for holding cushions on opposite faces thereof, said cushions, guides, a gib,

arranged in said guides and adapted to receive the stroke of the outer loop member of the ;lug-strap,said bodyan'd cushions havingholes to receive the sides of said loop member and said'body having recesses to receive the yielding {parts of said ,cushions.
7-3. A dug-strap supporter for looms comprising a metallic body, provided with an eye to receive a supporting strap adapted to be secured to .the :pickerestick of ;a loom and also provided with meansfor holding cushions on opposite faces thereof, said cushions, guides, a gib, arranged in said guidesiand adapted itQ receive the stroke of theiouter loop member of the ilugstmp, said body and cushions having holes to receive the sides of said loop member and said :body ihaving recesses to receive the yielding parts 105E said cushions.
a. A lugss-trap supporter for looms --Go mprising a metallic abody, provided with guards to prevent lateral and longitudinal displacement of cushions, said cushions, gi-b arranged .to receive the stroke of the outer 1001) member of the lug-strap, said body and cushions haying holes to receive the side of said loop mem er- I ,5. A lugestrap supporter for looms comprising a metallic body, cushions arranged on opposite faces of said body, a gib-ofiindurated fiber arranged in contact withthe enter one :otsaid cushions, [and guides for said gib combination with a lug strap adapted to bind said metallic body, cushions and giib together.
In testimony whereof, I ,affiX my signature hereto in presence oftavo witnesses. I p
