COMBINED GUN AND KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 10, 1918. Serial No. 253,372.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnr ToMANEK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Truscott, county of Knox, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful in Combined Guns and Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in implements of warfare and particularly to guns of the musket or rifle type. i
The principal object of the invention is to provide a knife or bayonet which normally is maintained in a suitable covering carried by the gun barrel but which may be projected at will for desired purposes.
A further object is to provide means whereby the knife may beheld firmly extended so as to be operated in the manner of a bayonet.
These and by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure l is a sideelevational view, showing a conventional type of gun and indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the same the knife being shown in its extended position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view, taken substantially through the center of the gun.
Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 1- 1 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevational view, showing the manner in which the knife or bayonet is held when in an extended position.
' As here shown in the drawings the barrel 10 of the gun formed with bore 11 for projectiles, is partly enveloped in a forestock 12, of the wooden butt stock 14, in which is contained the usual firing mechanism 15 and 16.
Firmly engaged at the front end of the projecting portion 12, by rivets or screws 18, is a U shaped metallic casing 20 containing in its front upper portion a longltudinally extending slot 21, limiting the action of and guiding a pin 22, fixed in a short cylindrical head or collar 24: from the front side of which extends a knife blade 25, the arrangement beingsuch that the point of other like objects are attained the knife is within the casing 20, when the collar 24 is in a retracted position. A U shaped loop 26, is secured at the bottom of the collar 22, the same normally sliding upon a. bar or guide 27, its fixed ends extending into the upper side of the gun barrel Patented Jan. '7, 1919. v
10, and in order to hold the knife rigidly extended when in its outermost position, a latch 30 is pivoted on the outer side of the 'casing 20, on the pin 31, the same having a forked outer end engageable with the pin 22 when in its outermost position.
Extending rearwardly from the collar 24:,
is a bar 34, passing through a fixed guide 35, set in the upper portion of the barrel 10, and encircling the front end of the bar 34 is a helically coiled compression spring 36, abutting at its rear end against the fixed guide bracket 35, and at its frontend against the collar 24, normally propelling the latter outward so that the knife will be exposed at the front of the casing.
Fixed at the extreme rear end of the bar.
releases the hook 39 from engagement with,
the eye, whereupon the compression spring 36, forces the knife blade outwardly at the front of the casing, where it may be engaged by the detent 30 and held rigidly outward.
From the foregoing it will be seenthat a concealed knife has been combined with the front outer end of a gun barrel in such mair ner that it may be projected at any desired time and held fixed in such position where it may be used effectively, also when not required, the knife may be retracted within the casing and held therein until its release is desired. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the class described, the combination with a gun, of a hollow U shaped casing engaged over the front end of said gun, a bar slidable in said casing, a collar attached to the front end of said bar, a knife in said collar, said knife and bar being normally wholly contained within said casing, means for projecting said knife cutwardly, a guide bar set in the muzzle of said gun, means for 'operating the lever noyement of said knife, an eye secured at the rear of said bar, a lever havlng a hook engageable With said eye, said lever being pivoted on a projection from the barrel of whereby said knife is released, and means for holding said knife When in an outwardly -10 I have alfixed' my extended position.
In testimony whereof signature. I
JOSEF TOMANEK.
