parallel relation and the comb teeth will be completely covered.
The adjacent faces of the two sets of comb teeth are in substantially planar relation so that when they are in the open position, as shown in Figure 6, they will have their points in substantially a straight line. It will be noted that each set of teeth is sharpened inwardly toward the center of the comb; furthermore, it will be noted that the two comb sections are so spaced that the teeth thereof will form a continuous row of equally spaced apart teeth when the comb is opened.
4 shape projecting endwise from each side wall at the open ends of the sections with adjacent ears of the respective sections overlapping each other adjacent to the bottoms of the side Walls when the sections are folded and adjacent to the tops and bottoms of the side walls when the sections are extended in lorder to strengthen and rigidify the assembly.
2. A folding comb comprising a pair of identical sections each including a pair of spaced apart side walls integrally connected along their top edges Vand along one end edge to provide a pocket Open An important feature of the present comb is l' the enlargement of each of the ears 311 and 34 of section I2, and of each of the ears 5| and 52 of section I4, in more or less the manner shown at 60 for the ears 30 and 34 and at 62 for the ears 5I and 52, so that the enlarged ears will overlap and intert adjacent to the bottoms of the side walls when the sections are folded as in Fig. 1 and adjacent to both the bottoms and tops of the side Walls when the sections are extended as in Fig. 4. In this way the assembly is strengthened and rigidied and kept from bending and breaking when subjected to torsional or opposite sidewise stresses, particularly when the sections are in extended relation. It will be noted that each ear, including its enlargement, is identical with each other ear in respect of outline shape, i. e., in respect of its ,outer configuration as viewed in side elevation; see Fig. 4 and Fig. '7; so that they cooperate to provide the desired overlapping and consequent strengthening at the tops and bottoms of the side walls, where this relationship and this quality are needed, whether or not the ears are overlapped in the intermediate zone between the tops and bottoms. l
While the trunnions 36 and 56 extend through the respective holes 54 and 32 and will serve to form a hinge between the two comb sections, yet it is found convenient in some instances to upset said trunnions whereby they overhang the edges of the respective holes to more securely fasten the parts against accidental separation. When the comb is made of metal the upsetting may be done by pressure and when plastic is used it may be accomplished by heat and pressure. The upsetting is best shown in Figure 6.
The comb structure just described presents a compact, sturdy and easily operated pocket comb, and one that has four smooth surfaces suitable for receiving printing or other advertising matter, that are always exposed whether the comb is open or closed.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A folding comb comprising a pair of identical sections each including a pair of spaced apart side walls integrally connected along their top edges and along one end edge to provide a pocket open at its bottom and at one end, comb teeth projecting from one of said side walls and each tooth having a length less than the depth of the pocket, and means pivoting the open ends of the two sections together with the teeth of each section aligned with the open bottom of the other section for movement from a folded position in which the teeth of each section are fully contained within the pocket of the other section to an extended position in which the sections are disposed end to end with the free ends of the teeth all disposed in substantially the same plane, said pivoting means comprising ears of identical outline at its bottom and at one end, comb teeth projecting from one of said side walls and each tooth .having a length less than the depth of the pocket,
and means pivoting the open ends of the two sections together with the teeth of each section aligned with the open bottom of the other section for movement from a folded position in which the teeth of each section are fully contained within the pocket of the other section to an eX- tended position in which the sections are disposed end to end with the free ends of the teeth all disposed in substantially theisame plane, said pivoting means comprising a trunnion laterally projecting from a side wall of each section adjacent to the open end and open bottom of the pocket thereof and a socket opening toward and aligned with said trunnion and formed lin the other side wall of saidsection adjacent to the open end and open bottom of the pocket thereof, whereby the two sections are pivoted together by intertting the open end portions of the respective side walls and positioning the trunnion of each section in the socket of the other section.
3. A folding comb comprising a pair of identical sections each including a pair of spaced apart side walls integrally connected along their top edges and along oney end edge to provide a pocket open at its bottom and at one end, comb teeth projecting Afrom one o-f said side walls and each tooth having a length less than the depth of the pocket, and means pivoting the open ends of the two sections together with the teeth of each section aligned with the open bottom of the other section for movement from a folded position in which the teeth of each section are fully contained within the pocket of the other section to an extended position in which the sections are disposed end to end with the free ends of the teeth all disposed in substantially the same plane, said pivoting means comprising a trunnion laterally projecting from that side Wall of each section from which the comb teeth project, the trunnion being located adjacent -to the open end and open bottom of the pocket in said section, Vand a socket opening toward and aligned with the trunnion, said socket being formed in the other side wall of said section and being located adjacent to the open end and open bottom of the pocket in said section, whereby the two sections are pivoted together by intertting the open end portions of the respective side walls and positioning the trunnion of each section in the socket of the other section.
4. A folding comb comprising a pair of identical sections each including a pair of spaced apart side walls integrally connected along their top edges and along one end edge to provide a pocket open at its bottom and at one end, comb teeth .projecting from one of said side walls and each tooth having a length less than the depth of the pocket, and means pivoting the open ends Aof the two sections together with the teeth of each section aligned with the open bottom of the other pocket thereof and pvotally tting into a hole 10 provided through the other side wall of said section adjacent -to the open end and open bottom of the pocket thereof.
