Application filed May 13,
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WAYNE S. EvaNs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State ot Pennsylvania, have invented a new and u seful Umbrella Rib and Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in umbrella construction embodying a stretcher of channelled or U-shape, the vchannel being of reversed form at an end thereof whereby while one portion is adapted to be pivotally mounted in a channelled rib another portion is adapted to receive the ad jacent portion latter and so folding the rib and stretcher in compact form as to occupy together small space and also to preventfl-.torsion and twisting of the rib and stretcher.
The invention is satisfactorily illustra-ted in the accompanying drawing, but-the im-y portant instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that lthe inventionis not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
'Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of an umbrella rib and stretcher embodying my invention, said stretcher being in partially open condition.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof.
Figure 3 represents a side lelevation thereof at a right angle to Figure l.
Figure 4 represents a perspective view of a portion of the stretcher embodying my invention.
Figure 5 represents a'longitudinal section of the bearing member for the pivot of the joint of the ribV and stretcher.
Figure 6 represents a transverse section on line 6--6 Figure 3.
Figure 7 represents a transverse section on line 7-7 Figure 3. Figure 8 represents a side elevation simil lar to Figure 1 showing, however, the
stretcher in folded condition.
Figure 9 Arepresents an elevation of another embodiment of my invention.
Figure 10 represents a transverse section on line 10-10 Figure 9.
Figure 11 represents a longitudinal section thereof.

of a portion of a stretcher removed from Figure 11.
Figure 13 represents a perspective view of the bearing member for the pivot of the joint of the rib and stretcher shown in Figures 9 and 11.
Figure 1e represents an elevation of an other embodiment of the invention.
Figure 15 represents a perspective view of a stretcher showing another embodiment of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding Aparte in the gures. Re ferring to the drawings,
1 designates the rib of an umbrella, and El designates a stretcher which is connected therewith in a manner hereinafter described, both stretcher and rib being of channelled or U shape.
In 'the channel of the rib at the place of junction of the stretcher with said rib there is fitted the pin 3 which is irmly secured to the rib by swedgingor pressing the material. of the rib tightly against the side of the pin as at 4, said pin having therein at one end an opening to receive the axial pivot 5 which is passed through an opening in the ear 6 on the adjacent terminal of the stretcher, the ends of said pivot being headed on the eiiierior of said ear so that said ends are `inclosed by the sides of the channeled or' U-shape rib and so removed from the exterior of the sides of the rib.
The crown pf the stretcher near the pivotal end is swedged as at 7 whereby the reim tive wallsmof lthe channel of 'the stretcher are reversed so that portions of 'the channel project in opposite directions. The portion at the end is reduced or iiattened and entered into the adjacent portion of the channelled rib with which it is connected by the Pivot .f3 while the major portion of the stretcher is adapted to receive the corresponding portion of the rib and to embrace the latter. By this provision'the stretcher and rib fold compactly together in the closed condition of the umbrella, thus reducing their -thicirness as thus folded and preventing lateral disconnection of the saine and relieving with separated ears 6 to receive said ivot,Vv
said ears 6 being on opposite sides o said ear 8, the heads of said pivot being on the exterior of said ears 6, and so inclosed Withinl-and by the side of the channel of the rib, said pin in this clase being solid, but to which I do not limit myself.
In Figures 9, 10 and 11 the pin is tubula and so has a plurality of ears 11, While the stretcher has its ears 10 contacting and mounted Within said ears 11 on the pivot 5 so that the ears Il are on the exterior of the ears 10,'y said pivot having its heads on the exterior of the earsll and as in the previous case inclosed` Within and by the side channel of the rib.
In Figure 14, the stretcher has at its pivotal end a plurality of ears 6. In Figure l5, .ll show a stretcher provided with inverted channels one at each ends being pivotally connected with the rib and the other end being pivotally connected with a runner of the umbrella.
Having thus described my invention what end thereof, one of the r I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A channelled stretcher in umbrella construction having a reversed channel at an end thereof.
2. In an umbrella construction, a channelled stretcher having at an end thereof a reversed channel and a channelled rib, the. main channelled portion of the stretcher being of a size to receivesaid rib and embrace the Walls thereof.
3. In an umbrella construction, a 'channelled stretcher having its channel at an end portion thereof projecting in reversed directions, and a channelled rib the pivotal end of said stretcher being mounted in said rib, and
the main channel portion of the stretcher being of a size to receive said rib and embrace the walls thereof.
