GEAT FOR FOLDING UMBRELLAS.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15,1913.
Application filed March 21, 1912. Serial No. 685,344.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARRETT F. MAREAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Greats for Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a speclfication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding umbrellas and has special reference to a joint for the ribs of such umbrellas.
The invention has for its object toprovide an improved form of joint which can be stamped out of sheet metal and yet it will be exceedingly rigid and hold the halves of the ribs properly in position.
The invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 shows an umbrella provided with r1b oints as constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the joint re moved. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged face view of one of the joint members. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken centrally of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a partial detail view of a blank used in forming that member of the joint to which the brace wires of the umbrella are attached. Fig. 7 is a section through the blank after the same has been partly folded. Fig. 8 is a view of the blank used for forming the remaining member of the hinge.
Fig. 9 is a face view of the connecting member of the hinge. Fig. 10 is an edge View thereof. Fig. 11 is an edge view showing the width of the blank illustrated in Fig. 6.
This invention consists in a blank having a rectangular body 10 and a reduced neck 11 from which projects a pair of symmetrical ears 12 having openings 13 formed therein. There is also provided a second blank having a body 14, neck 15, ears 16, and openings 17 precisely like the first blank but the second blank is furthermore provided with ears 18 projecting from the sides at the end opposite the ears 16. In each case the blank is folded along the central longitudinal line to a U-shape, that being the shape of the ordinary umbrella rib. The ears 12 and 16 are then pinched toward each other so as to make a structure of the shape illustrated in Fig. 4. The edges of the body are crimped over to engage the umbrella rib 19 as illustrated in Fig. 3 and in the case of the blank having a body 14 the ears 18 are folded over as illustrated in that figure until the openings 20 in these ears coincide and are in alinement. Between the ears 12 is fitted one end of a connector 21 having notches 22 at its outer edge wherewith the bottom of the U-shaped members formed by the blanks engage as can be seen by reference to Fig. 5. This member 21 further is provided with openings 23 for the reception ofv rivets 24 which pass through the openings 12 and 16,
respectively, and serve to connect the two. It will be noted by reference to Fig. 2 that the connection is so made that the ears come in cont-act when the device is opened straight out, thus preventing further movement than is necessary and holding the umbrella rigid. The ears formed by the extensions or ears 18 receive between them the rib end 25, being secured thereby by means of a pivot 26.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified.
In order to provide for means for fastening the material of the umbrella at the center joint each member 21 is provided with a small opening 27 through which the stitching thread may pass.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
A joint for umbrella ribs comprising a pair of geats each having a portion forming a U-shaped structure provided with projecting parallel ears, each pair of ears having alined openings adjacent its back and having the corners cut away adjacent said openings, 1
and a connecting link having spaced openings therein adapted for alinement with the openings in the respective pair of ears, said link being further provided with an intermediate opening adapted to lie between the cut away corners of the ears whereby a cover may be attached by sewing to the link, said spaced openings being at such distance that When the geats are alined in opening In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my the rib the inner corners of the ears Will signature in presence of two Witnesses.
abut to form a stop said link havin prd P jecting portions ,ezitending into the U-- MARRETT MARLAN' shaped portions of the geats and abutting Witnesses:
against the inside thereof when the rib is in Rosoon ARNETT, extended posltion.
