To all whom it may concern:

v Be it known that I, MAIuin'r'r MAREAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to umbrellas, and the principal object of the same is to provide an umbrella that can be compactly folded so that the same can be stored in a satchel or trunk.

A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the improved umbrella, shown raised. Fig. 2 is a similar fragmentary view, shown closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view shown I folded. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View showing the manner of connecting the handle to the staff. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail perspective views taken from opposite sides, showing the hinge members of the inner sections of the ribs. Figs. 7 and 8 are similar views of the hinge members at the outer ends of the braces. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the hinge .member at the inner end of the outer rib sections.

The improved umbrella comprises the stall that is formed of tubular material and made in two sections 9 and 10. Section 9 has a threaded extension 11 at one end that is adapted for threaded engagement with an internally threaded sleeve 12 that is fast within one end of the section 10. A rod 13 is slidable through the sleeve 12 and its inner end is provided with an abutment flange 14 that engages the inner end of sleeve 12 to limit the outward movement of the rod 13. The outer end of the rod 13 has a pivotal link connection 15 with the end extension 11 of the section 9. The outer end of section 9 has similar threaded and link connections 16 and 16 with the handle 17. With this type of staff and handle connections, it will be clear that the two sections of the staff can be threaded together and the handle connected to the other section to provide a rigid structure, and when desired the staff section can be separated and relatively folded on the link connection, and the handle separated from the outer section of the stall and foldedon its link connection 16, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings. Section 10 of the stall is equipped with the usual notched ring 18 to which the cover 19 is clamped.

The ribs used in connection with this invention are formed in two sections 20 and 21, the inner section 21 being hinged to the ring 18 in the usual or any preferred manner, and having their outer ends provided with oppositely disposed sets of fiat spaced parallel ears 22 and 23. The cars 22 have the end ear 24: of the outer sections 20 pivotally fastened between them. Said outer sections 20 are provided with abutment lugs 25 that are disposed opposite the ear 24: and contact with the cars 23 when the umbrella is in an open position. It is to be noted that the bodies of these ribs are of the type which is U-shaped in cross section and that the ribs are formed in the usual manner out of fiat metallic strips bent in this way.

The usual slide collar 26 is carried by the staff and has the radiating braces 27 hinged thereto. The outer end of each brace is crimped to provide the ear 28, and each crimped end is embraced by the sheet metal clip 29 that has its outer end shaped to provide a pair of cars 30 that project in spaced parallel relation to the car 28. This construction provides three cars at the outer end of each brace 27 which are hinged to the cars 23 of the rib sections 21.

The stafl is provided with the upper and lower spring catches 31 and 32 which engage the slide collar 26 in the usual or any preferred manner.

To fold the umbrella, assuming the same to be in the position in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings, the slide 26 is shoved toward the ring 18, and the other sections of the ribs swung outwardly. The inner sections of the ribs and the braces are then swung inwardly so that they will lie parallel with the stall section 10, and the section 9 is swung so that it will lie parallel with the section 10. The handle 17 is then swung parallel with the staff section 9, which causes the parts of the umbrella to occupy the relative positions indicated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings. When in such positions, it will be clear that the umbrella will require less than half the usual storage space so that the same can be readily transported in a travelers satchel.

WVhat I claim as my invention is 1. As a new article of manufacture, an umbrella rib section formed of a single piece of sheet metal stamped to provide a body, ears extending from one end thereof, and a lateral lug extending from each ear,-said body being bent to a U-shaped cross section and the ears offset in the direction of the bight of the U. a
