W. A. GRIFFITH.
} END BOARD FASTENING FOR WAGON BOXES. No. 247,820. v Patented Oct. 4,1881.
r Zflfmeaaeo: [70670502! 7' aJ/W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A GRIFFITH, OF RAGINE, WISCONSIN.
END-BOARD FASTENING FOR WAGON-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 247,820, dated October 4, 1 81.
Application filed February 17,1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. GRIFFITH, of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End- Board Fastenings for Wagon-Boxes, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a wagon-box provided with end-board fastenings embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the part of the fastening detached. Fig. 3 is a side view of the box with the fastening attached; Fig. 4, a top view thereof, and Fig. 5 an end view.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the box of a wagon.
B is the end-board or tail-board of the box A, and B B are the side-boards. The board B is removable and adapted to slide vertically between the rear portions of the boards B B.
O G are cuts or deep notches made vertically in the boards B B and arranged opposite or adjacent to the vertical edges of the board B.
D D are lugs applied to the board B, and arranged to enter and project laterally be 0nd the cuts 0 0 when the board B is in its place, as shown.
EE arebevel-headed spring catches or hooks applied to the boards B B, and arranged to engage the lugs D D, so as to holdthe board B properly in its place. This engagement occurs automatically as the tailboard is pushed downward to its seat. To release the tail-board itis only necessary to push the hooks E E away (No model.)
from their engagement with the lugs D D. The tail-board may then be removed by being raised out from between the side-boards. The lugs D D, passing as they do through the openings 0 O, prevent theside-boards from being spread apart; but it is not absolutely essential that the lugs should be T-shaped, as shown, for
that purpose, for the same result will follow it.
the outer ends of the lugs project in only one direction, so as to engage the side-boards. Neither is it essential that the inner ends of the lugs should be constructed precisely as shown, though I deem that form preferable.
It maybe desirable to bind or guard the side-boards near the cuts 0 G, and in such cases I propose to use the plates a a. Only one hook need be employed.
These parts may be furnished to the trade as fixtures, to be used lor the purposes set forth. v Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein described fixtures for fastening tail-boards, consisting of the lugs D D and books or catches E E, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the removable board B,the notched boards B B, the lugs D D, and one or more. catches or hooks, E E, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
- WILLIAM A. GRIFFITH.
