TOOL POCKET FOR OVERALLS Filed Jan. 4., 1946 CARL E. ams@ N,
Patentecl July 19, 1949 'E'OL PCKET EUR OVERALLS Carl E. Brisbin, Long Beach, Calii.
application January 4, 194:6,A Serial No. 639,053
, 3 Claims. l
My invention relates to pockets and more par.- lticularly to pockets adapted to receive and hold tools for instance, such as carpenter tools.
The object of my invention is to provide a pocket adapted to be sewn onto the hips of overalls for the purpose to carry try-squares and other tools therein.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pocket which makes it possible to remove tools stored therein while in steeped-over position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a pocket for overalls in which tools can be carried without inconveniencing the wearer of the overalls by rubbing against his hip.
Other objects of my invention may appear in the following specication describing my invention with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention. It is however to be understood that my invention is not to be limited or restricted to the exact construction and combination of parts described in the specication and shown in the drawing but that such changes and modications can be made, which fall within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational View of a pocket according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail numeral I!) indicates a hip portion of a pair of overalls to which a pocket according to my invention has been sewn.
The pocket has a front or outside portion II and a back or inside portion I2. The outside portion II is sewn onto the inside portion I2 so that the two tops of the portions will approximately coincide with each other.
Two pleats I3 are formed in the outside portion I I of the pocket running at a bias from adjacent the upper corners of the pocket downn wardly and inwardly.
The outward portion is hemmed all around its edges and is sewn onto the inner portion at the sides and the bottom.
The inward portion I2 is cut relatively much longer than the front I'I and is also hemmed all around its edges. The top edge I4 of the back I2 is sewn onto the hip portion of the overalls. The bottom portion projects beyond the bottom edge of the front I I and is folded upwardly and downwardly in the shape of an accordion pleat as shown at I5 in Figure 2. The lower edge Iii of the front is sewn onto the back at the same level with the bottom edge of the front II.
When the pocket formed by the front Il and back I2 supports some tools, these will not rub against the hip of the person wearing the overalls, because the accordion pleat I5 permits free play to the pocket and its contents away from the hip of the wearer.
And in the same manner the pocket will be prevented from tightening up and binding the tools in the pocket in case the wearer of the overalls has to work in a stooped position or on his knees, because the accordion pleat will give enough slack in such cases.
In addition to that the two pleats I3 will allow some extension of the pocket proper so that a tool can be easily taken out of said pocket no matter in what position the wearer oi the overn alls has to work.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a pocket for garments and the like, a pocket element having an outer sheet of material forming a front, a complementary inner sheet of material forming a back, means connecting the side and bottom edges of said front and back together, means connecting the upper edge of said back to the outer surface of a garment, a gusset, means connecting said gusset to the lower edge of said back and to the outer surface of a garment, said gusset providing yielding spacing and connecting means between the lower edge of the pocket elements and the outer surface of a garment upon which the pocket may be mounted.
2. In a pocket for garments and the like, a pocket element having an outer sheet of material forming a front, said iront having diagonally extending pleats at the side edges thereof, a complementary inner sheet of material forming a back, means connecting the side and bottom edges of the said front and back together, a pleated gusset, means connecting said gusset to the lower edge of said back and to the outer surface of a garment, said gusset extending from the lower edge of said back and providing yieldingv spacing and connecting means between the lower edge of the pocket elements and the outer surface of the garment upon which the pocket may be mounted, and means connecting the upper edge of said back to the outer surface of a garment, said last-named means and said gusset comprising the sole connection between said pocket and said garment.
3. A pocket for a garment, comprising substantially complementary outer and inner sheets ,of material providing respectively a front and a back for said pocket, said front being formed With a pair of laterally-spaced and upwardlyextending pleats, said front and back having side, bottom and top edges, means connecting said side and bottom edges of said front and back together to provide an open-topped pocket, an accordion-pleated gusset havingfanf edge ,conf nected tmgsaidibottomfedge ofisaidbaclmandean opposite edge adapted to be connected to an outer surface of a garment to provide yieldahlea. spacing means between said bottomredge, tosaid. back and the garment, said top edge of "Said back' being adapted to be connected to.fthefooter;sum` face of the garment, and said... connected-side..
edges of said front and back' being free 'of the garment to provide an open area behindsaidback:
between said top edge of said beck and said gusset.
