Dec. 6, 1955 H. A. DERING PROTECTIVE CARRYING BAG FOR LADYS PURSE AND SIMILAR OBJECTS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed May 11, 1951 FlE E| FlE E FILE 7 9 5 n Y N R m m m m n? M H% PROTECTIVE CARRYING BAG FUR LADYS PURSE AND SIMILAR OBJECTS Helen A. Dering, San Francisco, Calif.
Application May 11, 1951, Serial No. 225,732
4 Claims. (Cl. 2-66) This invention relates generally to a bag-like protective covering for a ladys purse, hands and wrists and to a blank. of material from which such an article may be easily formed.
Various garments are presently available to protect women and their clothing during rain storms and similar inclement weather. However, up until the present time while the garments protect the head and body of the wearer no article has been devised to protect both the hands and purse. In other words although a raincoat with an attached hood provides substantial protection to the wearer, the wearers gloves and purse remain exposed.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a protective bag in which the purse may be carried and into which the hands and Wrists of the wearer may be inserted for protection against the weather.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a blank of material from which such a bag may be formed.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a collapsible easily foldable bag which may be made of the same material as a raincoat and hood and which when needed may be easily unfolded to loosely enclose and carry the wearers purse while at the same time providing a covering for the hands and wrists.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description in which the preferred embodiments of the invention have been set forth in detail in conjunction with the accompanying drawing.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view showing a blank incorporating my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view showing the blank set forth in Figure l in partially folded condition.
Figure 3 is a rear View of a bag incorporating my invention and formed from the blank shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side view of a bag incorporating my invention. and formed from the blank of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a front view of a bag which is a modification of my invention.
Figure dis a side view of the bag taken along, the line 66 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 77 of Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a front view showing the modification in closed position.
Figure 9 is a side view taken along the line 9-9 of Figure 8.
In general my invention relates to a blank of material so cut and scored that without unnecessary waste of material a suitable protective carrying bag may be easily formed by folding along the score marks and sewing certain of the edges together. .Wherr so formed my bag is provided with a suitable interior which will loosely hold a shown in Figure 5 purse or similar object which may be inserted through a large cut or slit provided in one side. In addition, holes tates Patent 0 side edges 14 of the blank 1t are provided at the upper side edgesfor insertion of the hands and wrists, in order to give them protection from the elements.
As shown in Figure 1, I have provided a flat sheet blank 10 which has been scored and cut as will more fully be described. Generally fiat sheet blank 10 is scored along the dotted lines and is cut along the full lines, as shown in Figure l, to provide a longitudinal slit along cut line 11. A pair of gusset pieces 12 may be provided at each side of the blank, as shown in Figure l, for a purpose hereinafter described. Side edges 14 of the blank 10' are joined by fold lines 13 which lie adjacent gusset pieces 12. Upper and lower edges 16 are cut to form a substantially reo tangular blank. Suitable bend or fold lines are scored upon the blank in order to assist in sewing or otherwise fastening together the material to form a bag incorporating my invention. Thus I have shown transverse fold line 21 which serves to divide the blank into front and back portions. Fold line 22 runs longitudinally of the blank and by folding longitudinally along out line 11 and its extended fold line 23, as shown in Figure 2, suflicient strength is provided to prevent tearing of the slit during insertion of a purse into the assembled bag. Longitudinalofold lines 13 are provided adjacent gusset pieces 12 and when the material is folded upon longitudinal fold line 26 sufiicient strength is provided to prevent further tearing or distortion by the hands and wrists when inserted into the bag which has been formed. Fold lines 27 at either end of the blank when folded with diagonal fold lines 28 and longitudinal fold lines 26 provide a box-like structure giving the assembled bag sufiicient rigidity and structural strength to provide a durable article.
When the blank shown in Figure l is folded as shown in Figure 2 it may be assembled by further folding. By securing edges 14 and 16 as shown in Figures 3 and a bag is formed. Figure 3 is a rear view of the bag and shows vertical slot 11 through which a purse or similar object may be inserted. As shown gussets 12 on either side of the upper edge of the bag form orifices or holes for the insertion of the hands and wrists to also protect them from the weather. When folded and sewn edges 16 and fold lines 26, 27 and 23 form a box-like structure having sturdy corners to produce a durable carrying bag.
Figure 4 is a side view of the finished bag made from a blank incorporating my invention and showing the joined together to provide a suitable side member for the bag.
It will be evident that in order to make a blank with the above described scoring and folding. suitable automatic bag cutting and folding machines may be used, thus enabling low-cost production on a quantity basis. The dimensions of the blank may be varied to provide for bags suitable for carrying various sized purses or other objects. The blank may be formed from any suitable material including various plastics as well as water repellent fabrics which as mentioned before may be of the same fabric as a womans raincoat. If certain plastics are used heat sealing or gluing processes may be used in lieu of sewing in order to secure the sides together. Various modifications may be made such as, for instance, providing an elastic wristlet at the gussets 12 in order to insure waterproofing of the hands and wrists. The orifices for the insertion of the hands and wrists may also be formed without use of gussets 11-. by notching edges 14 and employing additional folding to form a suitable edging. Such a construction would permit use of a simplified blank outline.
As illustrated in Figures 5, 6 and 7, I have provided a modification of my invention which includes a bag-like portion 31 which is adapted to receive books, purses and other objects, and a cover or flap portion 32. Hand holes 33 are provided in the ends adjacent one side wall whereby the wearer may place articles within the bag portion 31, close the upper open portion 31 by means of the flap 32 and yet keep the wearers hands inside the baglike portion 31 to act as a support for the contents thereof.
As illustrated in Figures 5 to 9, inclusive, 1 have provided a modification of my invention which includes a bag-like portion 31 which is adapted to receive books, purses and other objects, and a cover or flap portion 32. Hand holes 33 are provided in the ends adjacent one wall of said bag portion 31 whereby the wearer may place articles within the bag portion 31, close the upper open end 34 by folding flap 32 to the left as viewed in Figure-6 and yet keep the wearers hands inside the baglike portion 31 to act as a support for the contents thereof and to provide protection for the hands. As shown in Figure 5, the bag is provided with a pair of upper straps 36 and lower straps 37. These straps serve to permit adjustment of the bag to accommodate packages of various sizes. The straps are tied either long or short depending upon the size of the package carried within the bag which in turn determines the amount of upper flap 32 which is folded over upon the lower bag-like portion 31. As shown in the detailed cross-sectional view of Figure 7, as well as in Figure 5, the entire bag is provided with a gusset 38 which permits lateral eXpan sion of the bag to accommodate packages of various thicknesses. Gusset 38 gives the bag fullness for accommodating packages of rather thick dimensions without diificulty, as shown in Figure 9. The large open end 34 permits the easy insertion of packages of all sizes and shapes since the entire top of the bag is open. When the upper flap portion 32 is folded over the lower bag portion 31 a waterproof and dustproof enclosure is formed. The straps not only adjust the over-all proportions of the bag but also serve to hold the cover or flap portion 32 in proper covering position.
it is apparent that under some conditions it may be found desirable to join two or more pieces of material to form one of my devices. it is equally apparent, however, that to join two pieces of material does not depart from the spirit of my invention inasmuch as the end product is substantially the same. In addition, it is ap parent that the side edges may be curved to accommodate the device more readily to current fashion.
While I have shown the split 11 as being vertical in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, it is apparent that it may be horizontal to the bottom 16 or diagonal with respect thereto. The device may be provided with loops or handles to add to the convenience of the same but it is obvious that the provision of handles or hanging loops is optional.
I claim:
