This invention relates to a pipe, for smoking tobacco and it is one object of the invention to provide a pipe wherein smoke from the bowl passes. through a chamber formed in a block disposed rearwardly of the bowl so t-hat the smoke will be cooled and filtered before reaching the bore of the mouth piece, the bore of the mouth piece being separatedfrom the'bore of the step by a barrier so that saliva in thestem will be prevented from reaching the-bowl andtobacco juice which may tendto accumulate in the bore" of; the stem prevented from reaching: the bore ofthe mouth piece. It will thus be seen that tobacco in the lower portion of the bowl cannot be moistened by saliva and that any tobacco juice entering the bore of the stem will be prevented from passing through the mouth piece and burning the tongue of a person smoking the pipe.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pipe including a block which may be readily applied thereto and have communication with the bore of the stem and the bore of a mouth piece at opposite sides of a plug or barrier located in the stem between openings with which openings or ports of the block communicate.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pipe including a block formed with a chamber which may constitute a cooling chamber for smoke or serve as a chamber in which a filter is placed so that smoke will be filtered and nicotine removed from it before the smoke reaches the bore of the mouth piece.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pipe including a block formed with passages for communicating with bores of the stem and the mouth piece of the pipe, the construction being such that the block may be readily applied to a pipe of conventional construction and thus allow a conventional form of pipe to be readily transformed into a pipe of the improved construction.

This improved pipe has a bowl I provided with a stem 2 which extends rearwardly from the lower portion of the bowl and is formed with a bore 3 having its front end communicating with the bottom of the bowl. A mouth piece 4 which may be of any length desired extends rearwardly from the stem 2 and has its forward end portion 1 Claim. A block 8 is carried by the stem 2 rearwardly of the bowl I and may be formed separate from the bowl and the stem and secured thereto in any desired manner or this block may be formed integral with the stem and the bowl. Openings or ports 9 and ID are formed vertically in the block and upper ends of these ports communicate with front and rear portions of a chamber ll formed in the block. This chamber constitutes a cooling chamber for smoke and is open at one side, the open side or end portion of the chamber being threaded so that a plug l2 may be screwed into the chamber for normally closing the open side or end thereof. A groove I3 is formed in the plug in order that it may be readily screwed into place or removed. Lower ends of the ports 9 and Ill register with openings l4 and I5 formed in the stem and extending upwardly from the bore 3. The plug or barrier 6 is located between the openings 14 and I5 and therefore during smoking of the pipe the smoke must pass upwardly through the registering openings I4 and 9 into the chamber 1 I and then through the registering openings l 0 and IS in order to reach the bore 1 of the mouth piece by way of an opening l6 leading from the forward end portion of the bore 1 and registering with the inner end of the opening l5. Filtering material [8 placed in the chamber ll will serve very effectively to remove nicotine or other substances which may enter the chamber II with smoke and therefore nicotine or other moisture cannot enter the bore 1 of the mouthpiece and pass through the mouth piece into the mouth of a person smoking the pipe. By removing the plug l2 the filtering material may be withdrawn from the chamber l I and a fresh filter applied. When the block 8 is applied to a pipe of conventional formation, it is merely necessary to drill openings 14 and I5 through the stem and an opening H5 in the neck of the mouth-piece of the pipe, the block being then cemented or otherwise firmly secured upon the stem in abutting engagement with the bowl and a plug or barrier being thrust into the bore 3 so that it is located ahead of the mouthpiece and between the openings l4 and [5. Smoke from tobacco burned in the improved pipe will be dry and free from nicotine and other substances which are objectionable to smokers.

It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a, more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.

Minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, a stem extending radially from the bowl near its bottom, said stem having an axial bore entering the end remote from the bowl and communicating with the interior of the bowl, said stem also having a pair of longitudinally spaced radial bores opening through the wall thereof and communicating with the axial bore, said radial bores extending in the direction of the open end of the bowl and along axes parallel with the longitudinal axis of the bowl, a, plug in the axial bore of the stem between the radial bores, a block fixed to the stem, said block having a circular cylindrical chamber open- 4 ing through one side of the block, said chamber being concentric about an axis which is spaced from the stem and lies along a plane midway between the radial bores, said block also having spaced parallel bores opening into the chamber and lying tangent thereto, said last named bores opening into the radial bores in the stem, a removable plug closing the open end of the chamber, a bit entering the open end of the axial bore and said bit having an axial bore extending therethrough and a radial bore which communicates with the radial bore in the stem remote from the bowl and a charge of filtering material removably contained in the chamber and extractable through the open end of the chamber when the plug is removed therefrom.
