T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK H. FARNS- WORTH and ARTHUR J. BARNES, of Detroit, \Vayne county, Michigan, have invented an Improved Mode of Attaching Buttons to Garments and a Device for Accomplishing the Same, of which the following is a specification.

The nature of this invention relates to a new and useful mode of attaching buttons to garments and in a device for accomplishing the same; and the invention consists in the mode and in the construction and combination of parts of the device, as more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure l is an enlarged perspective of our improved device. Fig. 2 is a sectional View, showing manner of securing a button in place.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A B representthe two jaws of the instrument, provided with the handles O D, operated in the usual manner, the upperjaw, A, being somewhat the shorter of the two.

To the inner face of the jaw A, I secure a plate, E, which is provided with the small outweirdly-projecting lip a, the under face of which is recessed, as shown. The upper face of thejaw A is recessed, as at b, and is provided with a leaf-spring, F, which projects beyond the toe of thejaw.

In the inner face of the jaw B, I secure a' plate, 0, the face of which is rough or serrated, as shown. It is evident, however, that should the jaws be made of steel the separate plates above described could be dispensed with in such case, the lip a being formed upon thejaw and as a part thereof.

In practice, the head of the button is inserted in the recess 1) beneath the spring F, with the lip a projecting through the eye of the button, as is shown in Fig. 2. A proper tack, d, with'a malleable point, is then inserted through the material to which the button is to be attached, and it is then inserted between the jaws, the head of the tack resting upon 5 the plate 0, ately under the recess in the lip a. By then compressing thejaws together the point of the tack is forced through the eye of the button so that the point will be iinmediand clinched, thereby securely fastening the holds the button while the clinching is being performed, substantially as described.

2. An instrumentforattaching buttons, substantially such as described, provided with means for pressing the head of a malleable tack, and having a recessed lip, a, and clinching its point through the eye of a button for securing said button to agarment, substantially as specified.
