ABe it known that I, EDWARD D. STEELE, a citizen ol' the United States, residing` at XVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usel'ul Improvements in Settinglnstruments, and I do declare the followingto be a fulhclear, and eXact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, rel'erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures ot' reference marked thereon, Which form a part ot' this specieation.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of setting-instruments which are designed for attaching buttons or studs having penetrating-prongs te articles ot` wearing-ap parel, the object of my present improvements being to provide certain novel and simplified means for permitting ofthe ready insertion of the button or stud into the holdingjaw ofthe instrument, securing the same rigidly therein until attached to the fabric or material, and
permitting of the easy removal of thebuttou or stud, when so attached, from the holding jaw of said instrument; and to these ends my invention consists, essentially, ofthe details of construction and general arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter i'nlly described, and specifically designated in the claims.

In carrying out my inventiouthe settinginstrument is composed of an upper and lower jaw, A B, adapted to be operated by the handles C D, in a manner well known, the upper jaw, A, in the present instance being divided longitudinally at or about the center ot the holding mechanism into two parts or sections, a a', the one part or section, a, being formed integral with the lower handle, D, while the other part or section, a', is pivoted to the part a and adapted to close against the side of the same, as fully shown in the drawings.
Through the lower portion of each of the parts or sections a a is provided au arched opening, b, for the reception ofthe head'of the button or stud, said opcningscoming intojuxtaposition with each other when the pivoted section a is closed against the stationary part or section a, as fully shown in Fig. 6. The arched openings b are each provided with an inclined or wedge-shaped bottom, c, which taper inwardly toward each other and have their lower inner edges recessed out to receive and hold the head ot'the metallic fastener or prongs, as fully shownin the detail sectional views. A bit'urcated spring, d, or plate of suitable sheet metal,projects through the opening b for the reception ot' the head and shank of the button or stud, the rear end of said spring or plate being rigidly secured to the outer side or' the stationary part or section c by small screws or other suitable means.

Upon the lower front end ot' the movable part or section a is provided aside lug or projection, h, having a slight recess or depression upon its upper face, which is adapted to spring into a recess or cavity, i, of a corresponding shape in the lower front end of the stationary section a, to hold said sections in a locked position until released bythe action of the thumblever g, or by the pressure applied to attach the button or stud to a fabric or material.
In the operation ofattaching buttons or studs having metallic fastening-prongs to fabrics or materials, the movable section a is thrown outwardly by means ot' the thumb-lever g, so that the button or stud may be slipped into the forked end ofthe spring or plate d in the position shown in Fig. 5, ouehalt of the head of 9 the metallic prongs resting in the recess in the lower end ot' the wedge-shaped bottom. The movable section a is then swunginto position against the stationary section a, the wedge shaped bottom of the same projecting beneath the forked end of the spring or plate d, serving to draw the metallic fastener up into a rigid IOO position in the recesses in thelower inner ends of the inclined bottoms, as fully shown-in Fig. 6. The handles C D of the instrument,being now compressed together, 'force the fasteningprongs through the fabric or material, and, by means of suitable dies in the lower jaw, B,
' clinch the same upon the lower surface thereof to hold the button or stud securely in place. When so attached, the button or stud is released from the holding mechanism by swinging back the movable section a and slipping the sameoff the forked end of the spring or plate d.
By means of my improvements the operation of attaching buttons or studs to fabrics is greatly facilitated, insuringbf the ready introduction of the button or stud in theholding;r mechanism in the simplest and best possible manner, as also permitting of the easy withdrawal of said button or stud from the holding mechanism when attached in the desired position upon a fabric or material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and useful- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described setting-instrument composed ofthe jaws A B and handles C D, the upperjaw, A, of which is divided into a stationary section, a, and movable section a', each of which is provided with arched openings b, and wedge-shaped bottoms having recesses to receive and hold the head of a metallic fastener, said stationary section a being provided with a forked spring, d, and end recess, ,-and
