Description

Nov. 23, 1948. E. L. EVANS 7 2,454,505

Patented Nov. 23, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOOR HOLDER Edward L. Evans, Wilmington, N. 0.
Application August 23, 1946, Serial No. 692,648
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to door-hoIding devices, and is more particularly concerned with a yieldable member that serves as a pressure catch when the door is closed.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which is associated with the door frame and serves to exert pressure on the edge of the door, thereby effectually holding it in closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and durable device which can be manufactured at a low cost.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation showing the device installed on the door frame to impinge the top of a door.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation showing the device installed to impinge the free edge of a door.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device in operative position and the tongue thereof in section.
Figure 4 is a transverse section of a door frame and closed door with the device in operative position.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the device.
Like numerals, as used in the description and drawings, designate the same parts of construction.
Ill is a door and l I the door frame. The device l2 may be installed above the door, as shown in Figure 1, or on the side, as shown in Figure 2. It is designed to be secured to the door frame by means of two or more wood screws and is positioned contiguous to the gap between door and frame.
Preferably, it is made out of a spring metal blank, but a blank of yieldable sheet metal will be suitable also. It is formed with a rectangular portion l3 apertured for screws, as at I4, and slotted transversely, as at l5. The blank is bent at an approximate right angle with the slot l5 in the lateral of the device.
Said lateral is provided with a reduced longitudinal extension l6 forming a tongue, and this is coiled and passed through said slot so as to project to the rear of the rectangular portion I3, being elongated for this purpose.
Attached to the under side of the tongue by rivets I1 is a rubber pad l8 which contacts and grips the edge of the door when closed, but this device is operative without it.
In attaching the device, the part l3 of the device is attached to the door frame so as to position the tongue I6 to the rear, thus placing it in the path of the door. Normally, the tongue l6 projects downwardly at an angle, as clearly shown in Figure3, thus contact is made with the edge of the door, as soon as it reaches the vertical plane of the door frame.
When the door is closed, the tongue I6 is pressed toward the door frame and thus exerts pressure which is effective to hold the door in the closed position until intentionally released.
As different embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it will be understood that the matter herein is to be interpreted as illustrative merely, and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is:
A door holder, comprising a plate adapted to be rigidly secured to a vertical surface of a door frame adjacent the opening therein, an integral lateral portion of said plate extending laterally therefrom substantially at right angles thereto in a plane substantially parallel to the edge of a closed door, said portion being formed with an elongated slot therein, said portion including a free edge formed with an integral extension comprising a tongue of reduced diameter, said tongue being formed to provide a coil spring including a turn extending through said slot, said tongue terminating in a straight portion extending inwardly of said opening of said frame at an acute angle to said lateral portion of said plate whereby to resiliently engage and hold an edge of a closed door.
