Application Med May 16,
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known t at I, QLARENCE C. Cox.- LETTE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Amsterdam, in the county of [Montgomery and State of New York have made an Invention Appertaining to a Taper Clip, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
' My invention has for its ob ect to provide a clip for securing a plurality of sheets together, the clip being formed of a single piece of wire having two portions that are, by the elasticity of the wire, firmly held against each other or in substantially the same plane. The portions may be coiled or they may be made U-shaped, according to th forms of clips well known in the art. The invention consists face having projecting parallel ridges or teeth extending transversely to the clip or to the wire from which the clips are formed and disposed more or less closely to each other to form a relatively large engaging area, the parallel ridges however being disposed sufliciently apart to enable good frictional engagement and not raised sufficiently to cause distinct penetration of the surface of'the paper. The ridges may be disposed some little distance apart, the parallel rela- 80 tion of the slightly raised ridges preventing distinct penetration but affording the properengagement over a relatively wide area to make the clip exceedingly valuable forgeneral commercial use. 3! so called by reason of the parallel arrangement of the ridges, is located on portions of the clips that make contact with the sheets which they are designed to hold. The ridges may be formed by sharp parallel transverse 40 cuts of shallow depth across the wire of the clip before or after the clip is formed or by other suitable means that will strike up the ridges. The file-like surface forms an engaging surface which will not destroy the surface of the sheets that may be held by the clip when they are removed from the clip, but nevertheless the clip will firmly hold the paper. r
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the enclosed drawing.
' Figure I of the drawing illustrates a front in providing a sur- This file-like surface,

. view of a clip containing the invention. Fig.
2 illustrates an edge view, and Fig. 3 illustrates an enlarged broken view.
In the form of the clip shown, the clip 1 is provided with 'two U-shaped portions 2 and 3 constituting legs of the clip that are located in the same plane and consequently one of the U-shaped legs, such as the leg 2, 1s located within the other,'that is, the leg 3. The opposite sides'of the cli as formed are provided with file-like sur aces. The filelike surfaces are formed over the sides of the wire that form the opposite faces of the clip. The file-like surfaces are formed by a plurality of closely positioned cross-cuts in the same manner that a flat file is formed. In the preferred form of the invention the file-like surface 4 extends from points 5 located above the bends that form the U- shaped portions of the clip to near the ends 6 of the wire, whereby the clip can be easily started over the paper to which it is to be attached.
In this form of clip when the paper is inserted between the U-shaped legs in the manner well known the file-like surfaces of oppositesides of the clip engage the sheets of paper,-that is, the file-likesurface on one U-shaped leg engages the papers on one side, while the file-like surfaces of the opposite face of the clip on the other leg engages the other side of the papers. I claim:
1. A paper clipformed of a single piece of wire having bent leg, portions located substantially in the same plane and having file-like surfaces formed on opposite. faces of the clip.
2. A paper cli formed of a single piece of wire having ll-shaped leg portions located substantially in the same plane and having file-like surfaces formed on opposite faces of the clip and extendin from a point well above the curved part 0 the U-shaped portions in order that the clip may be readily started over the edges of the sheet material to be held by the cli In testimony whereo I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
CLARENCE o. GOLLETTE.
