Description
M, LIEBMANN BLANKET FASTENER March 7, 1939.
Original Filed Dec. 16, 1937 INVENTOR Patented Mar. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Original application December 16, 1937, Serial No. 180,102. Divided and this application tober 4, 1938, Serial No. 233,154
4 Claims.
This invention relates to clamping means for holding blankets, sheets or the like in place against a mattress, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a device which will efiectively prevent the blankets from being kicked or thrown off the bed, or otherwise displaced to leave the body exposed and unprotected.
This application is a division of my co-pend ing application, Serial No. 180,102, filed December 16, 1937.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a clamping device of the character described which is especially adapted for use in connection with mattresses having a rolled top extending along the upper edge of the mattress, the clamping device having means by which the roll top of the mattress is firmly embraced, and having angularly disposed lips overlying a portion of the top and side of the mattress and firmly holding portions of the bed covering against the same.
More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a clamp having a pair of jaws formed with concave-convex portions extending over and embracing the rolled top of the mattress, and having elongated lip portions disposed angularly with respect to one another and overlying the top and side of the mattress to hold the bed covering thereagainst, with spring means for urging the jaws to, and holding the same in, gripping position.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein an embodiment of the invention is shown, Fig. 1 is a fragmental end View, partly in section, of a roll edge mattress showing the improved clamping device in position thereon; Fig, 2 is a top plan view of the clamping device, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through one clamping lip of the device, the under surface of said lipbeing provided with a padding.
With reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing, I0 indicates the rolled edge of a mattress ll, said rolled edge being usually formed along the top of the mattress and extends completely around the same. superposed upon the mattress in the conventional way, is a sheet, quilt or blanket l2 which may be held securely and neatly in position over the mattress by means of a plurality 5 of clamping devices l3, one of which is shown in the drawing.
The clamping device I3 comprises an upper member 14 constituting a jaw, and a lower member l5 comprising a second jaw, the two mem- 55 bers being held under tension and normally urged at one end toward one another by means of the cylindrical or C-shaped spring 16. The jaw members l4 and 15 each comprise a fiat ledge or lip H, a circular or arcuate portion 18 and a finger extension or handle I9 which protrudes through a slot 20 in the spring IS. The arcuate portions l8 of the jaws extend around or fit over the roll edge 10 of the mattress, and the C-shaped spring extends over and encloses said arcuate portions of the jaws.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, the blanket or other cover I2 is shown as extending over the roll edge 10 and held in place on flat portions of the mattress, namely, the top and side of the mattress, by the ledges or lips I l, and against the roll edge ill by means of the arcuate portions I8 of the holding members 14 and I5. The clamping device l3 may be removed from the mattress by pressing the finger extensions together until the flat lips or ledges I! are far enough apart to clear the roll edge Ill. The lips or ledges 11, if desirable, may be provided on their under surfaces with a soft, pliable or resilient protective lining preferably having non-slip characteristics,
as shown at 2| in Fig. 3.
As will be seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing the lips or ledges I! are longer than the arcuate portions of the jaws so that they present projecting portions which extend beyond the sides of the jaws, thus enabling these lips to engage elongated areas of bed covering. It will also be noted that when in operative position, these flat lip portions or ledges I! are disposed at substantially right angles to one another so that they are presented to the top and side of the mattress in such a way as to insure fiat face to face engagement with the bed covering, whereby the possibility of tearing or damaging the bed clothing or mattress, or the forming of sharply defined indentations therein, by edges on the jaws, is wholly prevented.
It will be understood that all of the various parts of the device may be made of any suitable material, shape, and size, and that I may employ one or more of such devices at the edge of the mattress according to requirements necessary to hold the bed covering securely and neatly in position.
What I claim is:
1. A device for holding bed covering to a rolled edge of a mattress, said device comprising companion members each having a jaw arcuate longitudinally of the member and a handle projecting rearwardly from the jaw, a lip at the front of each jaw, the lips being of greater length than the width of the jaws and having end portions projecting from opposite sides of the jaws for engaging elongated areas of bed covering when the jaws are in straddling engagement with a rolled edge of a, mattress, the lips being disposed atright angles to each other for flat face to face engagement with bed covering at the top and side of the mattress, and spring means urging said jaws and lips towards each other to a clamping position.
2. A device for holding bed clothing to a rolled edge of mattress, said device comprising companion members each having a concave-convexed jaw and a handle projecting rearwardly therefrom, lips projecting forwardly from front ends of said jaws, the lips being disposed in planes at right angles to each other for fiat face to face contacting engagement with bed covering when the jaws are in straddling engagement with a roiled edge of a mattress, and spring means for urging said jaws and lips towards each other to a clamping position.
3. A device for holding bed covering to the rolled edge of a mattress comprising, companion clamp members each having a jaw arcuate longitudinally of the member and a handle projecting rearwardly from the jaw, a lip at the 7 front end of the jaw, the lips being longer than the width of the jaws, an arcuate spring embracing the jaws and urging the jaws and lips toward one another to aclamping position, the lips being of greater length than the spring and having ends projecting from opposite sides of the jaws for engaging elongated areas of bed covering at the top and side of a mattress'when the jaws are in straddling engagement with the rolled edge of the mattress, the lips being disposed substantially at right angles to each other when in flat face engagement with the bed covering.
4. A device for holding bed clothing to the' rolled edge of a mattress comprising, companion members each having a concavo-convexed jaw fitting over and conforming closely to the rolled edge to be embraced, a handle projecting rearwardly from each jaw, lips projecting forwardly from the front end of each jaw, said lips being disposed in planes at right angles to each other for fiat face to face contacting engagement with bed covering disposed over the top and side respectively of a rolled-top mattress, and a C- shaped spring extending over the concavo-convexed portions of the companion members for urging the jaws and lips thereof towards each other to a clamping position.
