Description

UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. KURRE, on PERRYVILLE, MISSOURI.
STUMP-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,179, dated August 2, 1881.
Application filed April 22, 1581.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. KURRE,0f Perryville, in the county of Perry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Burners; and I do hereby declare that thefollowin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved stump-burner in its extended position ready for use, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through line or :20, Fig. 1.
Similar'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention comtemplates an improved construction of stumpburners, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My improved stump-burner is composed of three or more sections made of sheet'metal, and denoted, respectively, by the letters G, G, and G, forminga hollow cylindrical chamber, A. The top part, G, hasa cone-shaped top or root, B, which is provided with a central smokestack, (3. The top and bottom cylinders, G and G are of the same diameter, the bottom part being provided-with one or more furnace doors, D, and a corresponding number of draftopenings, E, which are covered by sliding doors F. The middle cylinder or section, G,
is of a slightly smaller diameter than Gr and G so as to fit within both, as clearly shown in the drawings. Bent springs H H are fastened circumferentially to the inner, lower, and upper "rims respectively of the parts G and G so as to bear against the middle cylinder, G, with sufiicient friction to prevent the col- (No model.)
lapse of the apparatus when in its extended position.
The apparatus having firstbeen extended to the proper height is placed over the stump, which is fired by fuel being placed around its base through the openingsl). The springs H H will prevent the top part, G B G, which is the heaviest, from sliding down upon the top of the burning stump, which would seriously interfere with its speedy and perfect combustion, and will provide for sufficient air-space in the upper chamber, G, to insure an unobstructed draft.
I do not claim, broadly, a telescopic or extensible stump-burner but WhatIclaim as myimprovement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A stump-burner constructed in three or more sections adjustable upon one another and provided with friction-springs for the purpose of preventing the collapse of the structure when extended, substantially as shown and described. v
2. The herein-described extensible stumpburner, composed of the hood or top part, G, having friction-sprin gs H, cone-shaped roofB, and smoke-stack G, cylindrical middle section, G", and cylindrical bottom part, G having furnace-doors D, and draft-openings E, provided with sliding doors F, constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
"UHARLES H. KURRE.
