UNITED vv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JoHNTHURMAN, on PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MITT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of I letters latent llo. 244,949, dated July 26, 1881.
Application filed January 4, 188]. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN THURMAN, acitizen of Pennsylvania, residing at Philadelphia, in
the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mitts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a knitted woolen mitt for the hands of letter-carriers, street-car conductors, transfer agents,'and those following other vocations where the sense of touch is necessary, said mitt being adapted to protect the body of the hand and the knuckles of the phalanges from cold, and also the wrist, leaving the fingers and thumb at liberty for the purpose of manipulating money, tickets, &c.; and the novelty consists in the new article of manufacture,
- as will be presently described and more fully tect the veins,
set forth. is
It is well known that articles of this kind are of great importance, and to attain the approximate advantages of the construction various methods have been employed, such as severing the fingers of gloves formed and intended to cover the whole hand; but in all such expedients the fraying out of the thread or yarn, or the rough edge of the finger-open ings thus made, have either rendered the mitt useless or "uncomfortable.
In my invention the mitt is of woolen yarn knit to the form of tlie body of the hand, and extending sufficientlynpon the wrist to pro- &c., rLear the skin. The finger holes are formed byknittin g across from back 0 to front, or ice versa, in the manufacture of the mitt, and these connecting parts are of such character and dimensions as not to interfere with the free action of the fingers, and the yarns, being continuous from front to back, pre- 5 vent all frayingvor unraveling.
The device is complete in itself, protects the body of the hand, the knuckles, and the wrist, in which places the important circulation lies close to the skin, and allows liberty of action to the fingers and thumb, which may be protected or warmed in the pockets when not in use.
.The accompanying drawingis a perspective view of the device, in which A represents the body of the mitt; B, the connected wristlet; G, the thumb-aperture; D, the finger-apertures, formed'by the narrow connections 61 between front and back.
The complete device is formed of continuous yarn by knitting or the like, and may be ornam'ented in any desired manner by changing the colors of the yarns.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
' As a new article of manufacture, the knitted 65 woolen mitt herein described, composed of the body A, wrist 13, formed of continuous yarns, and. having apertures 0 D, the latter being formed by the narrow strips 01 of the yarn, the whole formed and adapted to serve as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony'whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OHN THURMAN.
