SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,648, dated July 19, 1881.
' Application lled Septemeer 28, 1880. (Model.) l
To all/whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES L. NEVILLE, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at OFallon, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Stump-Extractors, of which the following -is a specification.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction and to increase the` efficiency and power of those stump-extractors in which a capstan, sweep, and carrier are employed.y
My improvement consists, first, in a stumpextractor provided with a capstan moved vertically and adapted to be raised by the elevating ropes or chains which are built upon themselves between the head and bearingplate in winding them around the capstan, and adapted to be lowered by unwinding the said ropes or chains, as hereinafter described.
My improvement consists, secondly, in a bearing-plate having inclines or cams adapted to direct the ropes or chains over each other as they pass up throughV the beam to the lcapstan, as hereinafter described.
My improvement consists, thirdly, in a stump-extractor provided with-an eveneror carrier having sheaves or pulleys at each end, in combination with sheaves or pulleys working within the beam, and suitable .ropes or chains passing around the sheaves or pulleys and connected with the capstan,- as hereinafter described.
In order that my invention may he fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-v A Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved stump-extractor, the capstan and carrier being in their lower position. Fig. 2 is-a perspective view of the capstan and its adjacent parts, showing the ropes or chains built upon themselves and the capstan and carrier elevated thereby. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a top view of the same.
F may represent a suitable frame forming a substantial support to a beam, B, and may be mounted on vwheels W. The beam is provided with a bearing plate, D, having inclines or cams I, and through which the capvertical slot, within which are mounted lower sheaves or pulleys, P P', or upper sheaves or pulleys, P3193, in such position as to permit Ythe lower end of the capstan to pass down between them centrally of the beam.
R It are two ropesv or chains, each secured at one end to a link, L, on the evener, then passed over a sheave, P', above, within the beam, then under a sheave, P2, beneath, in the evener, then passed overa sheave, P3, above, in the beam, and the other end secured beneath the head K of the capstan. Each sheave P3 is set obliquely to the beam, so as to bring the outer side in line with the outer side of the lowest sheave, P2, and its inner Side in line with the periphery of the capstan, so as to direct, when the sweep' and capstan are turned, the rope or. chain in front of the vertical wall of an incline, I, beneath the under coil and onto an incline. The ropes or chains are thus built up between the head K of the capstan and the inclines, which elevates the carrier E and capstan at the Same time. The evener or carrier is adapted to equalize the weight brought to bear onthe capstan.
By .my construction it will be seen that great power and efficiency in working are obtained, while the whole machine is of most simple construction.
Having thus described my invention, the following s'what I claim asV new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the sliding capstan, rope, and sweep, the capstan adapted to be elevated by building up the coils of rope, as explained.
2. The combination of the slidinglcapstan C, having head K, ropes R It, inclines II, and a suitable sweep, as set forth. p
IOG
3. The combination of bearing-plate D, hav- 5. The combination of the evener E, having ing ineliues 1 I, oblique sheaves P3 P3, ropes sheaves P P', and links L L, ropes R R, eap- R R, and sweep S, as set forth. stan C, and sweep S, as set forth.
4. The combination of upper sheaves, P3 P3, JAMES L. NEVILLE.
5 lower sheaves, P2 P2, Within the beam B, evener E, having sheaves P' P', empstau C, ropes R R, and in suitable sweep, S, as set forth.
