PORTABLE ROOF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,887, dated September 28, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK MOEUING KEEL- ER,0fHaSki11S,i11 the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Roofs,of which the fol.- lowing is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 isa side sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken online a a: in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide for the use of farmers and out-of-door workmen an easily-constructed portable roof which may be readily adjusted to various heights.
My invention consists in avertical post provided with feet and braces,andin aroofformed of separable timbers and boards arranged to slide up and down on the posts, and in means for raising and lowering the roof and holding it at the desired elevation, as hereinafter more fully described.
The posts A are provided with tenons a upon their lower ends, which are fitted in the slot bin the sills or feet B, which sills, as shown, are formed of planks B, spaced by the tenons a and braces C, hereinafter described, and fastened together by the bolts 1); but these sills may be solid sticks mortised for the posts and braces.
The braces O, secured in the sills B, enter notches c in opposite sides of the post A, and keep the posts A at right angles with the sills B. In the upper ends of the posts are formed mortises d, in which are journaled sheaves c. The posts A are provided at their tops with caps f, and upon opposite sides of the posts, near the braces C, are secured cleats g, the caps f and cleats 9 serving to limit the movement of the roof.
The ridge-pole D is formed of two parallel beams, h, with intervening distance-pieces, t, whose width is a little greater than that of the posts A. The posts A are received between the beams h, forming the ridge-pole, and out side of the posts and between the ends of the beams h are journaled rollers j, which bear upon the outer sides of the posts A,and which admit of moving the ridge-pole D up and down when the posts A are subjected to outward pressure.
On each post A,on the outer side thereof, and near the lower end, is secured a Windlass, E, of the ordinary description, which is provided with a hand-crank, k, by which it may be operated. Ropes ZeXtend from-thewindlass over the sheaves e, and are attached to eyes at, secured to the distance-piecesi in the ridge-pole D. Between the beams h, forming the ridgepole D, are pivoted the braces F upon bolts n, passing through the'beams h and the braces, and the free ends of the braces are beveled to adapt them to enter notches 0, formed in the posts A. By meansof the braces F the ridgepole D is held at any desired height, and is also braced. A frame formed of side bars, G, and end bars, H, is arranged to slide between the 'posts A, and is provided with cleats 1), which guide them along the posts A.
The roof-boards I J are provided with cleats g at opposite ends, the cleats upon the upper ends of the roofboards projecting downward, and the cleats upon the lower ends of the roofboards projecting upward. The roof-boards I J alternate with each other, so as to break joints and prevent the rain from leaking through. The downwardly-projecting cleats q of the lower roof-boards, J, are hooked over the upper edges of the beams l1, forming the ridge-pole, and the upper edges of the beams are beveled to conform to the pitch of the roof. The cleats q of the upper roof-boards, I, are hooked over the ends of the lower roof-boards, J. The lower roof boards, J, at the ends of the roof are provided with L-shaped cleats 1', which cngagethe side bars, G. A ridge-piece, K, formed of the boards 8, secured together at the proper angle, completes the roof.
My improved portable roof constructed in this manner may be adapted to any height of stack, and may at any time be raised or lowered. The roof-boards may be readily applied or removed, so that the stack which is to be formed under the roof may be built by means of a horse hay-fork.
If desired, the posts A may be made hollow of boards nailed together, when the pulleys may be placed inside of the posts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters I Patent, is n 1. In a portable roof, the combination of the 5 posts A, sills B, braces O, ridge-pole D,braces F, the frame formed of the end bars, H, andside bars, G, the roof-boards I J having cleats (1 upon opposite ends and provided with cleats r, for engagingthe side bars, G, and means for :0 raising and lowering the roof, substantially as herein specified.
