Description

o. w. BEAN. VATS FOR TANNING LEATHER.
Patented Nov. 23, 1875 MPFETERS, PHOTG LII'HGGRAPH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTIS W. BEAN, OF TECUMSEH, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN VATS FOR TANNING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,330, dated November 23, 1875; application filed October 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTIS W. BEAN, of Tecumseh, in the countyof Lenawee and State ofMichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vats for Tanning'Leather; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an apparatus for lowering the hides into and raising them out of the vats, as will be hereinafter more From the center of each end of the platform B rises a post or standard, D, and the upper ends of said posts are connected by a beam, E. O 0 represent two chains, which are fastened to the platform B on one side, one near each end, passed over the top beam E, and their other ends fastened at corresponding points to the other side of the platform. Chains G G, passing from a Windlass or other suitable elevating device, are hooked into the chains 0 O on the top of the beam.
The hides are spread on the platform B to any desired number, and then easily lowered into the vat, and when they have remained therein long enough they are easily raised from the same and lowered into the adjoining vat.
By the construction of the platform with its end posts, top beam, and binding-chains, it is prevented from tipping over to either side, but remains suspended in proper position for the lowering and raising of the hides.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire "to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the platform B, end
posts 1) D, top cross-beam E, binding-chainsv O (J, and hoisting-chains G Gr, as arranged, in connection with one or moretan-Vats, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
OTIS W. BEAN. Witnesses:
