Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE JOHAN BLOMGBEN AND CABLE ANDERSEN, OF GALESBUBG, ILLINOIS,
IMPROVED PAINTERS SCAFFOLD.
Specilieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 69, 16S, dated September 24, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J oHAN BLOMGREN and GARLE ANDERSEN, of Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Painters Scaftold; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 shows an end elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
In this invention several scatfolds are xed in an extension-frame, by which they may he elevated to any required height, one above another, communicating with each other by ladders.
In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may be enabled to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in detail.
In the drawings, A is the ground Hoor of the scaffold, fixed on sills a a a. At the corners of this floor, firmly fixed to the sills a a, are four upright posts, B B, connected together at their top by strong beams C G. On one side of the frame thus made, below the beam C, and parallel to it, is a stout beam, C. Two posts, B B', extend vertically from the beam C to the sill beneath it, serving to supL port the roller D, which works on a shaft bearin g in these posts.
The roller D is turned by a crank, d, and is provided with a ratchet and pawl, d', to prevent any accidental backward revolution from the slipping` ofthe crank from the operators hands or otherwise.
At the top of the posts B B' a small platform, E, is situated, which communicates with the oor below by means oftheladder e. The inside corners of the posts B B are beveled oli', and deep channels b b are cut in them, in
which t and slide vertically the posts F F of another frame of the same height as that just described.
G G are beams connecting the tops of the posts F F, and H H H are beams connecting` them together at their bottom.
Upon the lower beams, H H H, is laid a door, I, partially covering the bottom of this second frame. The corners t' tot' this iioor are cut away sufficiently to admit the passage of the posts of still another frame, N o. 3, which slides verticallyinside of frame No. 2 in the same manner as No. 2 slides inside of No. l; and above this still another', No. 4, may be added, and so on to any required extent.
Suitable ladders e e 6 are provided, each extending from the ioor of one of these frames to the cross-beam at the top of the same frame.
A rope or chain, K, extends from the roller D over a pulley, It, txed to the upper extremity ot' the ladder e, to an eye or hook, '/c, in the floor, to which it is fastened. By means of this rope frame No. 2 can be raised or lowered at pleasure by simply turning the crank (l.
Iorking in suitable posts L L, projecting upward from the platforms E, is a second roller, M, similar in construction to the roller D, and, by means of another rope, pulley, and eye, performing for fra-me No. 3 the same ofce that the roller D performs for frame No. 2. 0n the next floor above another roller is stationed to raise and lower the next frame, &c.
The upper extremities ot' the ladder-posts o may be used as the supporting-posts of the roller M, as shown in the drawings.
The sills of the lower frame are fourin number, one on each side of the frame. The sills of each frame above it are but three in number, the one which would extend across the side opposite to the oor being left out, in order that the frame may pass the door or ladder of the frame below.
Pawls p pl p2 are xed to the posts B B, and operate against the bottom of the posts F F when the latter are elevated, preventing their To the above specification of our improvement. we have signed our hands this 31st day of May, 1867.
