Description
JOHN ANDERSON, ABEL O. SMITH, AND ISAAC c.
Massara lntwt l @d tin.
WALLAO E, OF
LAKEVILLE, MICHIGAN.
Leners Patent No, 85,777, met Jawa/w12, 1869.
IMPRO'VED SCAIFOLD.
` The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent Aand. making part of the same.
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN ANDERSON, ABEL O. SMITH, and- ISAAO C. WALLACE, of Lakeville, in the county of Oakland, and State of Michigan, have invented a .certain new and useful Independent, Perpendicular, Movable Scaffold; andwe do declare the following to be a t'ru'e and accurate .description thereof', reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, and to the' letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specication.
The nature of our invention consistsin constructing a perpendicular frame, by and in which a platform can be raised, allowing the Workmen to approach the Walls of the building equally near at all points, raising and lowering themselves at Will; serving equally as Well as an elevator for raising heavy Weights to the tops of the walls in course of construction.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use our invention, we will now proceed to describe the same, and name its various parts.
A is a proper frame-Work, quadrangular in shape, and serving as a foundation, upon which we erect the standards B, secured to the same by the strap-hinges y 0, and connected at the top by the cross-beam'D.
yE are adjustable braces, hinged to the upper part of the standards B, and securing them ina vertical -position by means of the pins F, in the holes in the sides of the bed-frame A.
G is a platform, suspended from a movable crossbar, H, by the. standards I; the cross-bar and platform being grooved at each end, to receive and embrace the standards B, the platform also having a stay-piece, J,
across each end, and forming a mortise, and preventing the standards B from spreading.
The platform is raised or lowered by the Workmen, by means of a rope, K, one end of which is secured to the strap-ring of the standing block L, suspended from the cross-beam D, and led down and around the pulley M, in the platform, thence over the sheave in the block L, and down through a proper hole in the cross-bar H ofthe platform G, where it is secru'ed by a couple of turns ofthe rope around the cleatiO.
When the platform is to be used for raising heavy weights, the rope is passed down through a proper opening in the platform, and secured to a Windlass, P, at the lower parts ofthe standards B. u
Should'there be an inequality in the surface of the ground, the standards B are maintained in a vertical position by securing the lower. ends of the adjustable braces E at the proper angle, by. the pins F, entering the proper holes in the bed-frame A.
The apparatus being folded compactly, is light, and easy of transportation. Y
l/Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-4 f In a scaffold, substantially as described, the combinafion ofthe frame A foldin beams B and adusta- 7 g a J ble braces E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
