IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,124, dated May 30, I87 6;
- March 31, 1876.
To all whom. it may concern: Be it known that we, MARSHALL ELIAS DOZIER. and ORION THEOPHILUS DozIER, of Atalla, in the county of Etowah andSt-ate of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an elevator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of our machine, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents the frame of an elevator. B is the platform thereof, and O O, &c., represent the bars or levers, forming what is known as a lazy-tong structure for raising and lowering said elevator. In the center, at the bottom of the frame, is a shaft, D, carrying a drum, E, upon which is wound a rope or chain, a, connecting with a smaller Windlass, G, at either end of the frame on top, so that by winding the rope or chain on such Windlass it will unwind from the drum E. At one end of the main frame A is an auxiliary frame, A, in which is an upright shaft, D, having a projecting lever, and upon which the chain a may be drawn from the drum E, either by hand or horse power, thereby giving greater power. To the ends of the lower bars of the lazy-tong structure 0, or to their connecting-bars, are at- A tached ropes or chains 1) b, which connect with the ends of the shaft D, said ropes or chains being wound upon the shaft D when therope a is unwound from the drum, so as to draw the bars downward and inward, thereby extending the structure upward. These ropes or chains b pass around wheels or rollers d, placed on each side of, and a suitable distance from, the center shaft D. On each side of the main frame A is a standard, H, suitably fastened thereto, and carrying at its upper end a pulley, 0, over which a rope,f, passes from a pulley, h, on the end of the shaft D. On the end of the rope f is a ring, 6, which is placed application filed over the end of the top pivot-bar of the structure 0. In raising the structure, these ropes f will be wound upon the pulleys h, thereby pulling or lifting the top until the same is nearly level with the top of the standards, when the rings 73 slip off. The structure, being raised to this point, is now more easily carried upward by the pulleys, already described, theyhaving been assisted in the meanwhile in raising it to the top of the standards. The platform B works on wheels or rollers 70 on the top pivot-bars, in grooves, thereby giving it an easy and exact motion, and is held to said bars by elongated staples m, in which the bars may slide back and forth as the structure is raised and lowered. J J are two standards, placed on the second pivot-bar from the top of the structure 0, and passing through staples on the sides of the platform, the top pivot-bars passing through slots in said standards. These standards are connected at the top by a crossbar, I, and serve to steady the structure when elevated. The structure is held firm by means of a rope, p, from each corner of the platform, which rope may pass directly to a drum, L, on the Windlass G, or first around pulleys s in an extended arm, K, at the bottom of the frame, and then to said drum L. The steadying-ropesp are connected to, and operated by, the same Windlass or windlasses as the elevating-ropes, and unwind from drum L with sufiicient rapidity to allow the structure to ascend, and at the same time steady and hold it upright. The structure is further held by upright sectional standards N, secured to frame, as shown, or in the ground, and passing up through holes in frame, and staples in platform, and through bar M, which rests on, and slides with, platform, and has ropes extending from it to suitable fastenings on the frame or in the ground, to hold the standards steady. The bar M may be secured at the top of standards.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with alazy-tong structure, 0 G, &c., of the ropes or chains b 12, rollers d cl, shaft D, drum E, rope or chain a, and
Windlass G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The slotted standards-J, with connecting.
bar I, in combination with the lazy-tong structure 0 O, &c., plat-form B, and staples,- asand for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination,with thelazy-tong structure and platform'thereon, of the elevatin g-ropes a and the steadying-rop'es p,'-'c'onnected to,*and
operated by, the same Windlass or windlasses Gr, substantially as herein set forth. g
6. The sectional standards N and sliding cross-bar M, from which steadying-ropes extend to the frame or ground, in combination with the lazy-tong structure and platform,
provided with 'staples,as and for the purposes a herein set forth.
