UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. PADGET'I, or BATES'VILLE, ARKANSAS.
HOISTI N'G-MAC Hl NE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,654, dated July 19, 1881. Application filed May 13, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. PADGE'IT, of Batesville, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Hoisting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a novel construction, arrangement, and combination of a platform, a hollow screw-shaft, a series of windlasses, a rope or chain, and a series of pulleys, whereby provision is made for raising and lowering weights, and for other purposes,'as
hereinafter more partioularl y described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of an apparatus embodying my improvements, Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
A represents a frame-work of any suitable tation when desired. The carriage is provided with upright post-s D, which slide in ways in upright portions of the frame A, and are provided with friction-rollers d. may be strengthened by diagonal braces e on their under sides.
To the top of the upper platform, B, is attached a tripod, F, in the'oenter of the top of which is a screw-threaded hole. In this hole works a tube or hollow shaft, G, which is screw-threaded on its exterior to correspond with the threads in the tripod. At the upper end of the hollow shaft is a hand-lever, g,for turning'it, and on the portion below the screwthread is a spiralgroove constituting a vertical Windlass, H. On the top of theplatform B,journaled in postst' i, is a tapering horizontal Windlass, J, on the face of which is a spiral groove. In the center of the platform B is an opening, in which is a pulley, K.
The upper end of a rope or chain, L, is secured, by a hook, I, or other suitable means,
The platforms to the top ofthe frame A. The rope or chain is then passed down through the hollow shaft G, then around the pulley K, then around the spiral horizontal Windlass J, and its lower end is secured to the vertical Windlass H.
The operator on the top of the upper platform, B, by turning the hand-lever g, winds the rope or chain L around the Windlass H, and thus hoists himself and the load carried on the lower platform, B
When it is desired to use this apparatus for hoisting loads on the outside of the building 7 where it is located, the platform is rigidly secured in the frame; and instead of securing the upper end of the rope or chain to the frame, as above described, it is passed over a pulley in said frame, and then carried, as shown in] dotted lines, over pulleysv in a bracket, M, attached to the outside of the building, so that by turning the shaft G the load outside is hoisted and the platform remains stationary. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of a rope or chain, a tubular screw-threaded shaft; a horizontal Windlass, and a vertical Windlass, substantially as and forthe purpose herein described.
2. The combination, with the platform B and by the shaft Gr, all arranged and operating as herein shown and described.
4. The combination of the platform B, windlasses H J, tubular shaft G, rope or chain L,
and bracket M, arrangedv and operating as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM B. PADGETT.
