HOISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,810, dated January 26, 1886.
Application filed June 26, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN O. RooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maple Park, in the county of Kane, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Apparatus,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a hoisting apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a hoisting appara' tus in which a load may be readily raised and thrown to the right or left, as required, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an upright frame consisting of side posts, B, and connecting cross-bars O D, the top crossbar, D, being slotted to receive a sliding crosshead, E, which is supported on said cross-bar D, the frame A being sustained on a suitable base, A. To the cross-bar O and a suitable part of the base A is j'ournaled a center post, F, to which is pivoted or hinged a vertically rising and falling crane, G, whose under side is provided with a pulley, H. Secured to the posts 13 and the base A are spiral ways J, which rise in opposite directions-from said base and have their ends at the place of junction with the posts B, it being noticed that the pulley H is so located that it may run on either of said ways relatively to the direction in which the crane G is swung. Attached to the cross-head E is a pulley, K, around which is passed a rope, L, which is guided on the head G of the crane G, and adapted to be connected with the load to be raised, said rope receiving power in any suitable manner. To opposite sides of the cross-head are attached ropes M M, which pass around pulleys Pon the top of the frame A, and have their lower ends secured to a lever, Q, which is pivoted to the crossbar C of the frame.
It will be seen that when a load is to be raised the rope L is secured or attached thereto in any suitable manner and power applied to said rope, whereby the load is drawn to- Serial No. 169,816. (No model.)
ward and to the head of the crane, the latter then rising and elevating the load with it to a certain extent, it being noticed that the crosshead E is at the center of the bar D. The lever Q is now operated, in order to shift the cross-head, by means of the ropes M, to the side in which it is desired to direct the load, (see Fig. 1,) and power continues to be imparted to the rope L, a lateral draft is imparted to the crane, which now swings to the desired side, and, being loaded, rides by gravity on the proper way, J, whereby said crane and the load are further elevated and directed to the side where the load may be discharged, it being noticed that the center post, F, turns on its vertical pivots or journals with the lateral motion of the crane. When theload is released, the crane is permitted to return down the incline or spiral to its normal position, the cross-head E being again set at the center of the bar D, and another load may be raised, the operations being similar to those hereinbefore stated, it being evident that the cross-head may be shifted either to the right or left end of the bar D relatively to the side of the frame it is desired to raise and discharge a load, it also being seen that the operation of laterally shifting and simultaneously raising the crane with its load is accomplished in an easy manner, and without the application of much power to the rope L, otherwise necessary, the slack of the ropebeing taken into prevent lowering of the load.
The crane is T-shaped, its head or outer limb extending above and below the main arm of the crane,whereby the rope L is held lower than if connected directly with the arm itself, and as the rope runs over the top part of the head the crane is held down and prevented from rising until the load reaches the lower part of said head, by which means objects or loads may be drawn some distance without being raised until they reach the head of the crane. This construction of the crane also strike an obstacle, in which case the crane will rise, due to the increased tension of the rope L, so that the strain on the rope and requirements for more power will be gradual.

A frame with ajournaled center post, to 5 which a crane is pivoted, and inclined or sp ral ways rising in opposite directions from the base, and on which the crane is permitted to ride, in combination with a power-rope bearing on the crane, and a shifting cr0ss-head 10 carrying a pulley on which said rope runs, whereby said rope is moved to the right or left by said head to direct the crane to either side of the frame, and the crane is raised by gravity on either of the spiral ways, substan- I 5 tially as described.
2. A hoisting apparatus having a powerrope and a crane and means for imparting a lateral draft to the said rope, consisting of a shifting head which is mounted on the frame of the apparatus, and a lever connected there- 20 with, the rope passing around a pulley attached to said head and bearing on the crane, substantially as described.
3. A hoisting apparatus having a T-headed crane, and a power-rope which bears on the 25 head thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
