MACHINE FOR REELKNG AND UNREELING WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,497, dated October 23,1888.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ARCHIE LEE VVHI'ITEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rus= sell, in the county of Lucas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Reeling and Unreeling WVire, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for reeling and unreeling wire for fences and other purposes, and for transporting the same; and it consists inthe peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wire-reel embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
A represents the axles, on the spindles of which are journaled a pair of supportingwheels, B, of suitable size. Secured to the axle near the ends thereof and projecting upward and rearward from the same is a pair of standards, 0.
D represents a pair of beams, which extend from one side of the axle, and are connected thereto by means of straps or clips E, said straps or clips being Ushaped, having their arms secured to the upper and lower sides of the beam, and having their central portions engaging annular grooves Fin the axle. The inner ends of the beams B are concave, and also engage the said annular grooves.
G represents a pair of brace-rods, which have their upper ends pivoted to the standard, and have hooks H formed at their lower ends, the said hooks being adapted to engage either of a series of staples or keepers, K, which are secured to the sides of the beams D. By this means the axle may be partly turned on the front ends of the said beams, so as to' raise the standards to any desired inclination and secure the same therein. The upper ends of the standards are provided with open slots L, in which are journaled the projecting spindies of a shaft, M. Said shaft has a crank, N, at one end,whereby it may be rotated, and secured on said shaft is a reel, which comprises a pair of crossed heads,O, and a series of rods, P, which are arranged concentrically with the shaft and connect the cross-heads. A pin, R, extends through the transverse opening in one end of the shaft, and the head of the said pin is arranged in a keeper, S, which is secured By this means the reel is to one of the heads.

The front ends of the beams D are connected by a cross-bar, U, the ends of which project beyond the outer sides of the beams. From the center of the said crossbar depends asupporting-leg, V, the function of which is to maintain the beams normally in nearly a horizontal position.
The operation of my invention is as follows: In order to reel up a wire the same has one end attached to one of the rods which connect the heads of the reel and the shaft carrying the reel is rotated. In order to unreel the wire the spring-detent is moved out of engagement with the reel and the latter is turned in the contrary direction.
By means of a machine thus constructed wire may be stretched along the post of a fence while the same is being fastened thereto, and wire may be reeled up as it is taken from the posts of the fence.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the axle provided with carrying-wheels and having annular grooves, the beams D, the clips secured to said beams and fitting in said grooves, the standards secured to the axle and projecting upward therefrom, the shaft mounted in the upper ends of the standards, the reel on said shaft, the keepers secured on one end of the reel, the pin inserted through said keeper and the shaft, and the spring secured to one of the standards and bearing against one end of the reel, as specified.
