FLOOD-FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,794, dated December 23, 1884.

Application filed March 7, 1894.

To all who'm it may concern:

Be it known that we, MATHIAss W. OFFILL and \VILLLLM I. EDMONDS, citizens of the United States, residing at Ashley, in the county of \Vashington and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flood-Fences; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical sectional view of our device, and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in flood-gates; and it consists in the construction and -novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter'more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.

In the accompanying d1awings,the letter A designates the gate posts or uprights, which may be set in the ground or in mud-sills 13.

O designates the lower transverse sill, and D a cross-bar connecting the upper ends of the posts. The posts are made high enough to allow for the-rise of the stock-gate. The ends of the transverse bar D project outward beyond the post, and these extended ends serve for the attachment of the bearings E for the pulleys F. These pulleys are double, having each a large grooved sheave, G, and a small grooved sheave, H.

K indicates slats, which are secured to the upper and lower ends of the opposite sides of the posts from the flood-gate, and as the ends are seated upon intervening blocks, I], they form with the posts slotways to guide the stock-gate N, the transverse bars m of said stock-gate having their ends extended, as at a, through the slotways.

To the extended ends of the upper bar, m, of the stock-gate cords or chains 1) are attached, which extend to the larger sheaves Fof the pulleys and are attached thereto. On the (No model.)

side of each post is secured a hearing, I, which receives ajournal, c, of the flood-gate 0 V. These journals are usually formed by the extended ends of the upper bar, d, of said flood-gate. Staples 8 serve to keep the journals in place. The ends of this bar (I are provided with lever-arms Z, which extend obliquely upward and inward outside of and at the sides of the posts. To the ends of these lever-arms are attached the cords or chains 6, which extend upward, and are attached to the smaller sheaves of the pulleys. 6

The cords or chains b and e are designed to be wound in opposite directions on the pulleys, so that when the cords e are being unwound the cords Z) are being wound up, and, reversely, the cords b unwinding when the c'ords c are being wound up. During the flood the gate V will rise, rotating its journals and causing its lever-arms to descend, turning the pulleys, and thereby lifting the sliding stock-gate N above its own level. Vihen the 0 flood recedes, the flood-gate will return to its vertical position in suspension, and the stockgate, which is much lighter than the floodgate, will fall to its normal position parallel to the flood-gate. In this position it serves to pre- 7 5 vent stock from passing under the flood-gate.

The combination, with the gate-posts havto ing bearings for the hinged flood-gate, of the pulleys arranged at the upper ends of the said posts, the flood-gate having the lever-arms, the verticallysliding stock -gate, and the ropes passing over the said pulleys and attached, respectively, to the flood-gate and stock-gale to operate the same, substantially as specified.
