Description

(Nomaden R. P. DAGGETT. URINAL.
No. 244,881. Patented July 19,1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT P. DAGGETT, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
URINAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,381, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed May 17, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT P. DAGGETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Urinals; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention.
My invention relates to improvements in nrinals; and the object of my'improvements is, iirst, to supply an automatic cover to be applied to old-fashioned porcelain or metal urinals already in use without removing them from their present position; second, to continue the adoption ofthe old-fashioned porcelain or metal urinals by supplying what they lack-viz., a cover to prevent the escape of the unpleasant odors, which will arise from their continual use without covers 5 third, to uncover and re-cover urinals automatically, and at the same time to automatically turn on or ot'f the water used in ilushin g urinals.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the entire apparatus; Fig. 2, a side view of the apparatus; Fig. 8, a Vertical section of the apparatus on line x on Fig. 1, showing cover O open by dotted lines; Fig.' 4, a vertical section ou line y y on Fig. 2.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The invention consists of frame B, made to lit opening of urinal and secured in place by langes b b, or by a iiange bent around rim of urinal and screwed to frame B.
The cover O is operated by shoulder d2 on arm D, which passes through shoulder d on frame B.
To arms D, on shoulders d', are secured cranks F. Cranks F are operated by weights F', to keep lid closed or to close lid when open, and by arms E, connected to ends of cranks F and to rod I. Rod I is connected to and operated by fore end of treadle K. Fore end of treadle K is operated by spring 7c', around guide k, to keep fore end up, or by the weight ot any person on treadle K to throw it down, and with it rod I, arms E, crank F, and cover C, in order to use urinal. Treadle K is hinged at rear end to oor.
(No model.)
The water to flush urinal before urinal is used, while it is being used, and after it has been used, is supplied by supply-pipe G, passing through shoulders d to cock H. From cock H pipe N passes arund'lid O, inside ot' iiange c. Pipe N is perforated with holes, to permit water to escape onto cover C when cover is opened.
Any person to use urinal must step on treadle K. ThisV throws fore end of' treadle K down, and with it rod I and arms E, which are connected to rod I and to cranks F. Orahks F are connected to arms D by shoulders d.' Arms E, being connected to cranks F, operate on arms D, which operate cover C by being connected to it by shoulder d2, and throw cover O down, at the same time raising weights F on cranks F. As cover is thrown down, the perforated pipe N, which passes around lid O, inside of flange c, operates cock H and turns on water as soon as thelid commences to open and while lid is op'en. The'urinal can now be used.` After using urinal, the person steps from treadle K. The weights F,which are attached to cranks F, lower and operate cranks F, and with them arm D and cover C. Oover G, in closing, operates on pipe N, which operates cock H, and when cover C is closed the cock H is closed and shuts oft' water. The operating of cranks F lifts arms E, to which they are attached, arms E raise rod I, to which they are attached, rod I, with the assistance of spring 7c around guide lc, raises fore end of treadle K. The urinal is now covered, the water shut off, and treadle K is ready to be operated againin opening cover to urinal. y What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in old-fashioned porcelain or metal nrinals, of frame B, cover C, arm D, cranks F, arms E, rod I, and treadle K, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in old-fashioned porcelain or meta-l urinals, of the frame B, cover O, pipe N, cock H, arm D, cranks F, with weights F', arms E, rod I, and treadle K, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
