FOOT FLUSH Filed Nov. 17, 194,4A
2 Sheets-Sheetl l Patented Apr. 12,Y 1949 UNITED IS TAT ES PATENT OFFICE FOOT FLUSH Ernest Farson, Xenia, Ohio Application November 17, 1944, Serial No. 563,886
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in urinals and has for its object to provide means for preventing the spreading of disease.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ilushing means for urinals which obviates the use of a users hands upon any connection of the urinal.
A further object of the invention is to provide in connection with a urinal a simple, inexpensive and eicient means for flushing the same with the shoe of the user thereof.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure l is a front elevational view of a urinal embracing my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure l, illustrating a modification,
Figure 4 is a side elevational View of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Like reference characters in the `drawings and the following specication indicate like parts and in which I0 indicates a urinal having a flush valve II, on the water pipe I2, and to which valve operating lever I3, is attached a horizontally disposed tube or bar to an upright rod IB, the lower end I1, of which is enlarged to substantially i'lt the tube I8, in which it seats upon a coil spring I9. Screwed into the terminal I1, is the reduced end 20, of
a foot pedal 2|, said reduced end operating 3,-:
through an elongated slot 22, in the face of the tube I8, whereby it may have a limited vertical movement up or down. The members I6 and 2l), are normally held raised by the spring I9, but may be pressed down, by the foot of the user of the urinal, against the tension of said spring.
It is obvious that by resting the foot upon the treadle 2|, the rod I6, will be drawn down which in turn `draws down upon end 23, of the connection I4, which in turn operates the flushing lever I3. When the operator of the treadle removes his foot, the spring I9, reverses the above action and thereby stops the flow of water into the urinal.
In Figures 3 and 4, I show a modification of the invention, which is more especially for use with a series of abutting urinals 24 and 25, with no space for the operating rod 26, to seat between said urinals 24 and 25; it is placed against the faces 21 and 21a, of said abutting urinals. In
I4, pivotally connected at I5,
this case, the upper crank end 28, of rod 26, is pivoted to the end 29, of the ilush-lever 32, of the valve 34, in the water supply pipe 35.
The tube I8, has its lower end 35, threaded and embedded in the cement or tile floor 31, whereby it is held fixed in position.
I have learned that certain venereal diseases may be contracted by persons using the hand flushing levers of urinals where persons having the disease have previously used the same levers and left germs thereon. Therefore, I have designed the above described ilushing device in order to obviate the possibility of spreading disease in the manner stated. As the use of ones foot to operate the iiushing valve there is no necessity for contacting any part of the urinal unit with the flesh of the user.
It will also be noted in my arrangement of the foot treadle, it is high enough from the floor not to interfere with washing or mopping the latter. It is also obvious that by foreshortening the rod I6 or 25, the device is equally applicable to toilet bowls.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be aible to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come Within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. In combination with a urinal including a flush-ing pipe and valve therefor, a lever connected to the valve, a vertically disposed rod having a horizontal upper end lconnected to the lever, a short vertical tube anchored in a floor laterally of and in front of the urinal and into which the rod projects, and a spring in the tube upon which the rod seats, said tube being provided with a vertical slot and a foot treadle xed to the rod and projecting through the slot, said slot extending upwardly from a point in said tube spaced a considerable distance above said oor.
2. Control means for the flushing valves of a urinal comprising a rod operatively connected to said valve and depending to a point immediately above a floor upon which said urinal is supported, a fixed short vertical tube having the lower end of said rod reciprocatively mounted therein, a vertical slot in said tube, a spring within said tube biasing said rod upwardly, and a treadle secured to said lower end and projecting through said slot.
3. Control means for the flushing valves of a urinal lcomprising a rod operatively connected to said valve and depend-ing to a point immediately above a iioor upon which said urinal is supported, a fixed short vertical tube having the lower end of said rod reeiprocatively mounted therein, a vertical slot in said tube, a spring within said tube biasing said rod upwardly, and a treadle secured to said lower end and projecting through said slot, said lower end being enlarged, said tube being open at both ends, and said treadle comprising a rod threadedly secured to said enlarged lower end and of a diameter substantially equal to the Width of said slot.
