GOMMODE CHAIR, l No. 356,654. y 'Patented Jan. 25,188?.
rUNITED STATES PATENT FRANKLIN U. MARTIN, OF ALTOONA, VISCONSIN.
COMMODE-.CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,654, dated January 25.1887.
' pfingsten sien May so, isst. seran No. einem. (No man.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANKLXN U. MARTIN, of Altoona, in the county of Eau Claire and State of iVisconsin, have invented a new.
and useful Improvement in Commodehairs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-e Figure l is a perspective view, partly in section, of my improved commode-chair Fig. 2, a side sectional elevation of the same 5 and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the water-apartment detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in coin mode chai rs, consisting of a reservoir or w ater-apartment within the back and sides ofthe chair communicating with the bowl beneath by means of a pipe provided with a valve op- @rated by means ol` a lever attachment, and also having connected therewith the cup-valve at the lower part of the basin, the entire device being so disposed as to be portable, and thus may be used in houses that have not the usual water service, all of which will now be fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a chair having the arms Band hack C made hollow and watertight, forming a reservoir. At the lower part of the device, resting upon cross-pieces D framed into the legs E of the chair,is a tank, F, to receive the waste water from the bowl G resting thereon. The said bowl G is secured in position between the said tank F and the seat H within the chair, having the usual opening-,Leentrally therein. The bowl G is of the ordinary pattermand has a pipe,.I, at its upper part communicating with the tank K within the arms B and back G of the chair, through which the water is supplied to the bowl G. A lever, L, having a vertical stem, M, for operating the same,is pivoted near its forward end and has a cord, N, attached rearwardiy, which passes over a pulley, O, ontwardly from the bowl, and thence extending into the bowl through an opening, Pis attached to the cup-valve Q at the lower part of the bowl. The said lever L is also provided with a vertical rightangled arm, R, which has a rearwardlyprojeoting rod,S, which connects with the arm T, attached to the valve Twithin the pipe J.
Whenever the stern M is raised by moving the lever L into the position as shown by the ldotted lines U,the cord N is operated over the pulley O, thus raising the cup-valve Qfrom its position in the month at the lower end oi' the bo'wl G to the position as shown by the dotted lines V. At the saine time the rod S, connected with the arm R of this lever L, opens the valveTrwithin the pipe J,thus permitting the discharge of the water from the tank into the upper part of the bowl G,Which continues as long as the stem Mis raised. The moment the stem M is released the lever L and rod. S return to their original positions in connection with the valve Q. Thus both the bowl f1 and the valve T are closed up.
The tank F is designed to be both air and.
`water tight, and designed to receive the contents of the bowhand may have waste-pipe and trap connections, if desired, though these are not essentially necessary.
As will be noticed,my device may be placed l in dwellings and be in constant use where water-service is not available.
Having described myinvention, what I claim as new is- In a commode-chair provided with a reservoir, K, and a tank, F, the combination ofthe bowl G, the pipe J, the stem M, the lever L, arms B and T, connecting-rod S,valves T' and Q, and cord N, all constructed and operating substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of S5 March, 1886, in the presence of witnesses.
FRANKLIN U. MAR-TIN.
