WITNESSES S.E.MO0RE.
TUB FASTBNER.
Patented July 12, 1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLON E. MOORE, OF SWANTON, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO WM. H. BLAKE, 2D, OF SAME PLACE.
TUB-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,282, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed March 24, 1881.
7 To all whom 2t may concern:
Be it known that I, SoLoN E. MOORE, of Swanton,in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tub-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my improved tuh-fastener; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view, illustrating the application of the fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Myinvention contemplates the construction, as an article of manufacture, of an improved fastener specially adapted for fastening the covers of butter tubs or firkins, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, A is a strip of tin or other suitable sheet metal, into opposite ends of which are' inserted headednails ortacks B B. To prevent the tacks from falling out I double the ends of the strip through which the tacks are inserted in under the strip, as shown in the drawings.
0 O are holes punched in the strip a short distance from its doubled ends, through which additional nails or tacks may be inserted in applying the fastener, the application ofwhich will readily be understood by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. The nail at one end is driven into the top of the cover about threefourths of an inch from the rim, the strip is then bent down over the edge, and the other nail is driven into the side of the tub, when the fastening is complete.
(No model.)
By doubling or holding the extreme ends ofthe strip or plate A through which the tacks are inserted over upon (that is, substantially 5 parallel to) the body of the plate or strip the bent or folded parts I) b cannot catch and become torn open in handling the package, as they are clamped between the body of the strip and the body of the package.
It will also be seen that the heads of the nails or tacks are entirely protected, whence it results that the nails are not detachable from the strip by any accident during transportation of the strips as a separate article.
, Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A tub-fastener comprising a sheet-metal strip with end portions folded back over its body and headed fasteners, the heads of the fasteners being arranged with their upper sides against the body and their under sides against the folded portions of the strip, as shown and described, for the purpose setforth.
2. A tub-fastener comprising a sheet-metal strip with end portions folded back over its body and headed fasteners, the heads of the fasteners being arranged with their upper sides against the body and their under sides against the folded portions of the strip, and with their shanks inserted through said folded end portions, as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLON E. MOORE.
