Peb. 17, 194s. A JENNI 2,436,303
' CIGARETTE SINUFFER Filed oct. 7,'1946 Inventor Ari/mf fami Attorneys lPatented Feb. 1 7, 1948 CIGARETTE SNUFFER Arthur Jenni, Twain-Harte, Calif., assigner of one-half to James C. McCandless, San Francisco, Calif.
Application October 7, 1946,-Serial No. 701,660
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to extinguishing accessories and appliances for lighted cigarettes and has more particular reference to a so-called snuffer, that is a restricted receptacle-like device into which the lighted end of the cigarette is inserted, this in a manner to snuff out the re.
Other objects have to do with anaccessory of the aforementioned type which is of utmost simplicity in construction, is practical and convenient, highly efficient in accomplishing desired results, aptly tted to fully achieve the ends sought, and economical.
Other objects, features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevational View of a projectible and retractible type ash receiver such as is used in present day automobiles, the same being provided with a snuier constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken approXimately upon the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the snuer and attaching bracket therefor, the section being on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; and,
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4--4 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings, by distinguishing reference numerals, it will be seen that the reference character A designates an instrument panel on an automobile, the same being provided with a projectible and retractible ash receiver. I find that my snuffer may be conveniently used in receivers of this type for which reason I have chosen to illustrate said invention in connection itherewith.
Considered in its broadest aspect the invention comprises an open ended glass or equivalent tube 1 having a bore 8 therein, said bore being adapted to receive the lighted end and stub of a cigarette therein. The bore is of a diameter slightly greater than the external diameter of a conventional or regulation cigarette. Hence, the cigarette can be dropped down into the bore and allowed to come to rest against a suitable base. In Figure 4 it will be seen that the base is a at plate 9 forming part of a multiple pronged fixture. The xture is denoted by the numeral I0 and comprises the plate 9 with circumferentially spaced upstanding tube embracing and clipping spring ngers I I. The bracket or fixture is suitably mounted on the receptacle B at any point and the lower end of the tube is snapped inl between the plate 9 and surrounding retaining fingers Il. It follows therefore, that if a lighted cigarette stub is dropped into the bore it comes into resting con'- tact with the base or plate 9 and by reason of the usual 11o-ventilation principle the cigarette is quickly snuffed out. Or, to put it otherwise, the iire on the end of the cigarette butt or stub is extinguished through these devices in an obvious manner.
The gist of the invention resides in the provision of an open ended glass or equivalent tube of appropriate length and diameter wherein the bore thereof is slightly greater than the external diameter of a regular marketed cigarette, said tube being used in connection either with a stationary bracket bottom, or a regular ash tray bottom for purposes of coacting therewith and defining a butt receiving and fire extinguishing and snuiiing receptacle.
A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction with the invention as illustrated in the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding and impression of the alleged features of merit and novelty sufficient to clarify the construction of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Minor changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of parts may be resorted to in actual practice so long as no departure is made from the invention as claimed.
I claim:
In a cigarette extinguisher of the snufi'er-type, an open-ended tube of re-proof material adapted to receive and temporarily pocket the ignited end of a disposable cigarette butt, a bracket comprising a horizontal plate of a size to substantially close one end of said tube, said plate being provided with vertical marginally arranged resilient retention and gripping fingers whereby to permit said tube to be snapped in place against the plate 3 and held by said iingers, the plate and tube then forming, in temporary combination, an ignited cigarette snufiing receptacle, said tube being Withdrawable from the fingers in order to permit the extinguished butt to be dislodged into a 5 receiver or the like.
