(-01. 131-227) This invention relates to extinguishers and is herein illustrated in some detail as embodied in an extinguisher to extinguish burning cigarets.

In the form shown it is especially devised to be free from the tendency to clog and also in a form which is economical to build and unlikely to get out of order.

In a prior application, Serial Number 579,928, now Patent 2,406,683, I described a cigaret extinguisher which involved a funnel-shaped top into which the cigaret could be pushed against a conical head and in that device both the conical head and the funnel-shapedmember were spring mounted.

That extinguisher proved effective but showed some tendency to clog because debris got into the two springs and also because the conical head might get jammed against moving.

According to the present invention those and other difficulties are overcome and a cigaret extinguisher is provided with fewer parts in which clogging is substantially impossible and yet which is adapted to be easily and cheaply assembled and the parts to be assembled can be automatically made at very low cost.

In the form shown the extinguisher is adapted to-be mounted over many types of saucers so that a metal stand holding it may be readily associated with many difierent types of saucers.

In the form shown an outer casing is adapted to be mounted in a stamped out stand and this casing may hold a fixed conical or semi-conical extinguishing member and may include guides in which a spring supported funnel-shaped member is adapted to slide when a cigaret is inserted and guide the cigaret against the cone-shaped member.

A single spring resting on the base of the easing and bearing against the underside by a ledge of the cone shaped member is adapted to be readily assembled and after insertion the parts are readily kept against separation by setting of a single pin in place which serves as a stop to limit the upward thrust of the spring.

Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

In using the present invention, a cigaret l0 having a burning end II is usually thrust into the open mouth l2 of a funnel-shaped member I3 so that the body of the cigaret on reaching the constriction l4 carries down the funnelshaped member l3 against the tension of the spring I5.

As the funnel-shaped member I3 goes down the lighted end I l of the cigaret strikes the conelike member l6 which projects upwardly and is preferably formed of solid metal so that the cooling effect of the solid body extin-guishes the burning end I l and efiectively puts out all sparks in it.

The cigaret is then withdrawn and dropped into a saucer or other receptacle H which is shown resting on the stand 58 which carries the extinguisher casing 19.

In the form shown the cone-shaped member I6 is carried on a cross-bar 20 forming the bottom of the casing I9 so that the cone-shaped member I6 rises within the depending walls 2| which form an extension of the funnel-shaped member [3.

In the form shown the walls 2| are slotted at 22 so as to ride on opposite sides of notches or depressions 23 cut in the cross-bar 2|]. Thus the cross-bar 20 forms a guide for the bottom of the funnel-shaped member l3 as it descends. The Walls 2| form hoods which keep the ashes and other debris away from the spring l5 which lies between the walls 2| and the vertical outer wall 24 of the casing [9.

In the form shown the ends of the spring l5 lie flat on the opposite ends of the cross-bar 20 and on the bottom overhanging ledge 25 of the casing.

The thick walls 26 which form the body of the funnel-shaped member [3 help to absorb the heat of the burning cigaret and normally extend a small fraction of an inch down within the walls 24 of the casing.

The casing is shown as provided with an annular projecting rim 2! which is adapted to rest upon the top 28 of an annular ring 29 which forms the upward terminus of an arm 30 of the supporting stand l8.

In the form shown the stand I8 is provided with wide spreading fiat arms 3| so that it tends to rest solidly on the table or other support. The upwardly extending arm 32 is usually bent so that the ring 29 lies about above the center line 5 between the ends 33 of the wings 3!.

For convenience in building, the cone-shaped member 16 is shown as a separate solid member having an annular ledge 31 near its bottom and a reduced extension 38 which is adapted to pass through the cross-bar 20 and be riveted or welded into the bottom of the cross-bar 3!).

2. In a cigarette extinguisher a hollow casing having a bottom cross-bar, a funnel-shaped cigarette receiving member slidable in the casing,
