FIG. 2.
INVENTOR WALTER 0.
BY M
LEWIS ATTORNEYS United States Patent CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER Walter C. Lewis, San Gabriel, Calif.
Application January 16, 1953, Serial No. 331,554
1 Claim. (Cl. 131-256) This invention has to do with devices for extinguishing lighted cigarettes or cigars and this application is a con.- tinuation of an application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 319,666, which I filed under date of November 10, 1952, and which is now abandoned.
It is an object of my invention to provide a simple, economical extinguishing or snuffing device for cigarettes or the like which is readily adaptable to being mounted in an automobile in position for convenient access and which is positive in its extinguishing action.
It is a more specific object to provide a device of this character which comprises a moisture absorbent member mounted in a casing and having a recess provided in the top end of the absorbent member having a depth sufiicient to receive the ignited end of the cigarette or cigar, the recess registering with an access opening in the casing.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description of a presently preferred embodiment of my invention, for which purpose I shall refer to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view with a part of the cover cap broken away for illustrative purposes;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a medial longitudinal section.
I wish it understood, however, that, other than as will appear from the appended claim, I do not necessarily limit my invention to the specific details illustrated and now to be described:
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a cup-shaped casing which preferably is a metal stamping or spinning, although suitable molded plastics may be used for the purpose if desired. The casing has a reduced diameter end flange 2 to frictionally receive the depending peripheral flange 3 of a cover cap 4. The cap 4 has a central access opening 5.
Fitted in the casing, I provide a moisture absorbent member and for this purpose it is my preference to employ a sponge which is capable of soaking up and retaining water or other extinguishing liquid when dipped into the liquid or when the liquid is poured into the casing through the opening 5. Preferably also the sponge should have a slight compression fit in the casing. In the top end of the absorbent member 15 I provide a recess which is preferably only of a depth suificient to receive the ignited end of a cigarette or cigar. In practice, I find that a recess of the order of one-half inch in depth ICC is ideal for the purpose. The recess is preferably round in cross-section and is of slightly larger diameter than the diameter of a conventional cigarette, if the device is to be used for extinguishing cigarettes; or, if it is to be used for extinguishing cigars, the recess should be slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of a cigar. This diameter differential preferably should be of the order of one-eighth inch so that the cigarette or cigar end may be readily inserted in the recess, but at the same time there will be ample assurance that not only will the extreme or ignited end of the cigarette or cigar engage the bottom of the recess but also the side of the cigarette C or cigar immediately contiguous the ignited end will also become engaged with the side wall of the recess as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3. Preferably also the recess 20 flares outwardly at its top end, as shown at 20a, to facilitate insertion of the cigarette or cigar.
T o facilitate attaching the device to a suitable support, I provide a hole in the side wall of the casing through which I insert a screw 25 with the headed end 27 of the screw inside the casing, and then I thread a nut 26 onto the screw and screw it up against the exterior surface of the casing to rigidly hold the casing and attaching means in assembly. In practice, I have found it desirable to thread the outer end of the screw into an element such as the detachable heating element of a conventional automobile cigarette lighter, which maintains the device in position for convenient use at all times.
I claim:
In a cigarette extinguishing device mountable on the body of an automobile, a hollow casing having a top cover presenting a central axial access opening therethrough, a soft, moisture absorbent body mounted in said casing beneath said cap and having an upwardly opening, said body having a cylindrical recess in register with said opening, said recess being of a diameter substantially A3" greater than the diameter of a cigarette and flaring outwardly at its top end, whereby when the burning end portion of a cigarette is inserted in said recess its burning end engages the bottom of said recess while its peripheral surface adjacent said burning end engages the side of said wall of said recess, and mounting means carried by said casing for securing the same to the body of an automobile.
