Description

April 28, 1959 J, H. DAVITT' I 2,884,174
Y ITRASHBAGHOLDER v Filed May 4, 1955 Fig. 1
IN V EN TOR.
JOHN H. DAVITT ATTORNEYS Unitti States This invention relates to a novel automobile accessory bracket adapted to clip onto a dash of an automobile and serve various useful functions. The bracket includes an arm pivoted thereto for movement about a vertical axis to positions forwardly of and beneath the dash and having means for supporting a container thereon, the construction permitting the container to be moved inwardly to an idle position beneath the dash or outwardly to a useful position forwardly of the dash.
The container employed can be constructed and mounted on the arm to serve its intended function. In one form of the invention, for example, the container will be a disposable paper bag for receiving trash. In another form of the invention the container is a combination ash receiving and cigarette butt extinguishing cup. The cup is constructed to hold a fire extinguishing liquid and is provided with a novel anti-splash cover having an ash and butt receiving wall therethrough spaced from the cup walls. The production of a novel automobile accessory of this nature and for the purpose described comprises the primary object of the invention.
These and other features of the invention will be more readily understood and appreciated from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof, selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates an automobile dash having two forms of my invention attached thereto,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the combined ash receiving and cigarette butt extinguishing cup shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom view of Fig. 2.
In the drawing indicates the dash of an automobile. Attached to the dash by means of a clamping screw 12 is a bracket 14. An arm 15 has a vertical portion 16 mounted within straps 18 integral with the bracket for pivotal movement about the vertical axis, the arm being held in place by bending a portion 19 of one strap into an annular recess 21 of the arm.
The lower end of the arm is bent horizontally and screw threaded. A U-shaped bracket 22 is threaded onto the arm and its two legs are secured by screws 24 to the side walls of a sheet metal housing 26. The front wall 28 of the housing is provided with clips 30 and 32 for engaging a cup 34 beneath its bottom end and adjacent to its top end for supporting the cup in upright position on and at the free end of the horizontal arm portion 20. The housing includes a light chamber 36 and a portion of the wall 38 is adapted to support a light 40 in the chamber. The light is provided with a contact cord 41 and is adapted to shine through a hole 42 in the front wall 28.
The cup is adapted to hold water or other fire extinguishing liquid and is of transparent plastic material sufficiently flexible to be engaged with and disengaged from the clips 30 and 32, the cup being notched at 44 to receive the clip 32. A plastic cover 46 fits tightly on the cup and is provided with an ash and cigarette butt receiving hole 48 therethrough, the hole being spaced to provide a covered anti-splash wall between the hole and the side wall of the cup.
The cup is shown in useful position forwardly of the dash in full lines in Fig. 2 and when not in use it can be ivoted to a position beneath the dash as illustrated in broken lines. The light is adapted to shine through the hole 42 and the transparent cup and thus provide convenient service for night driving. The lighted butts are quickly extinguished when dropped into the cup and the cup can be conveniently emptied merely by removing it from the bracket.
In another form of the invention an arm 50 pivoted for like movement about a vertical axis on a bracket 14' has a relatively long horizontal portion 52 and two spring loaded clips 54 thereon are adapted to engage the top margin of a paper trash bag 56. The purpose of the bag is to receive any trash to be discarded and when not in use the bag can be pivoted to idle position beneath the dash.
The invention is adapted conveniently and efiiciently to serve the functions stated and to aid in fire protection and clean highway promotions.
Having thus disclosed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A trash bag holder comprising a bracket, means for clamping the bracket to the dash of an automobile, a rod bent right angularly and providing relatively long and short arms at opposite sides of the bend, means mounting the short arm against longitudinal movement and for rotation about a vertical line in its longitudinal axis on the bracket and including two spaced straps integral with the bracket and supporting the rod at one side thereof and a third strap integral with the bracket between said two straps and supporting the rod at the other side thereof, and two spring loaded clips disposed in spaced relation on said long arm for clipping to and supporting a trash bag, the long arm being disposed horizontally and pivotal- 1y movable about the axis of the short arm to positions beneath the dash and forwardly thereof.
