LIP PROTECTOR DEVICE Filed Aug. 10, 1946 INVENTOR- Na f/ an Ma/erman ATTO RN E Patented Jan. 6, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LIP; PROTECTOR. ,DEVICE NathanMalerman, Forest Hills, N. Y. Applicati onAugust 10, 1946, Serial No..6 89,7 72
- 6 Claims.
, This invention relates to devices for shielding understood from the following description, when 4 taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which: Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view'of the front,
-- lower portion of the face illustrating one of my --improved protector devices in position on the,
-mouth.
- Fig. 2 is a sectionon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. -Fig. 3 is a section substantially .ontthe line 3-.3 with the lip protecting device-shown in its entirety. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1, omitting the lip or mouth portion and diagram- -lmatic ally illustrating i dottedlines movement of the device into open position.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, Ihave indicated at ID the lower chin and mouth portion of a face and, in Fig. 2, ll indicates the upper lip; I I2 the vlowerlip In Fig. 3 of the drawing, [3 and [4 represent the side, corner portions of the mouth. At [5 is shown one of my improved protector devices.
The device l5 comprises an upper lip shield or guard portion or member [6 and a lower lip shield or guard portion or member II. The member l6 has an upper double curved edge portion [8 of cupids bow contour; whereas the member 11 has a rounded, lower edge portion l9, these edge portions substantially conforming with the contour of the mouth extending over the lip portions II and I2 sufficiently to cover and shield outer surfaces thereof. Adjacent edge portions 20, 2| of the members l6 and I! are rounded or curved, as seen, for example, at 22 in Fig. 3 of the drawing, so as to expose the major portion of adjacent surfaces ll, I2 of the lips in order to establish a direct contact with an article placed in the mouth, such for example as the cigarette 23, shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This illustration of holding the cigarette in the mouth is only gagement with an object.
- Each of the members: lG and ll, at side-portions thereof, have inwardly. extendingilwalls,
both walls of the member It being .shownatjl in Fig.3 of the drawing and .one wall of the member: ll beingshown-at-25 in Fig. 4. of the-drawing. :These walls. are alsoindicatedin Fig. 2 of; the
- drawing The vwa1ls24 and-3,25 are joined in spring-loop. members. 26, which extend beyond vtheends ofthemembers IBandll, asclearly ,,-noted in Fig. 3 of the drawing and ,the: walls,
and 25. are notched, for example, as seen at. 21
in-Fig; .3:of the drawing,- so as to fit snugly in the. corners of the mouthwhile allowingthe memberslt to extend intothe mouth beyondthe ,corners l3; and It, so as to retain the-device against accidental displacement iromthe mouth.
The members l6 and l'lare curved.-vertically as well as longitudinally, to conformwith the curvatures of the mouth, as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and e 3 of the drawing. These: curvatures alsoaid in retaining the members I6 and I1 uponthe lips of the wearer, allowing thev members,v l6, and ll to move toward and from each otherin the movement of the lips and through the action of the I. s r g-mo s This movement is diagramma ically illustrated in the .full and dotted line L position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawin The notches 21 form relatively narrow necks 28 which .,.minimize. the spring action, so that there is no real ,forcerequired to separate the memberslfi and I'l ,,the inturned upperedge portion 29 of the member V I6 and inturned lower, edge portion .30
of the member I! retaining the two members upon the lips, as will clearly appear from a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The device can be constructed of any suitable material and may be made of plastic, in which latter case, the same can be of a color consistent with the normal lip coloring, so as to present a neat and finished appearance when used by the wearer.
It will also be apparent that the device may be constructed of very thin material, so as to be substantially unnoticeable upon the face and, in this sense, flexible to flex with the mouth in the movement thereof, so that the device will not interfere with normal conversation or normal lip movement. From this standpoint, it is possible that a device of the kind under consideration can be used for other purposes than simply a protector or shield, for which it is primarily intended. In other words, a device of this kind may be utilized as a medium for characterizing or enhancing the lips of a wearer, dispensing with the necessity of applying rouge or lip markings, particularly by theatrical folks. In these other uses, the material employed can be of a more flexible character and constructed of a soft plastic material, rather than what might be termed a hard or rigid plastic material.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. A lip shield device, said device comprising two lip covering parts adapted for arrangement upon outer surfaces of the lips of the mouth, said parts having edges conforming to the general contour of the mouth, means at end; extremities only of said parts for yieldably coupling the same to provide movement of the parts toward and from each other in corresponding movement of the lips, and adjacent edge portions of said parts having rounded edges extending to said ends forming openings exposing inner surfaces of the lips for direct contact one with respect to the other when said parts are in close proximity to each other. '2. A lip shield device, said device comprising two lip covering parts adapted for arrangement upon outer surfaces of the lips of the mouth, said parts having edgesconforming to the general contour of the mouth, means at end portions of said'parts for yieldably coupling the same to provide movement of the parts toward and from forming outwardly projecting members on said means extending into the mouth at corner portions of the lips in retaining the device against displacement from the lips.
'3. A lip shield device, said device comprising twolip covering parts adapted for arrangement upon outer surfaces of the lips of the mouth, said parts having edges conforming to the general contour of the mouth, means at end portions of said parts for yieldably coupling the same to provide movement of the parts toward and from each other in corresponding movement of the lips, adjacent edge portions of said parts having rounded edges extending to said ends forming openings exposing inner surfaces of the lips for direct contact one with respect to the other when said parts are in close proximity to each other, end portions of said devices having notches forming outwardly projecting members on said means extending into the mouth at corner portions of the lips in retaining the device against displacement from the lips, and said parts being of curved cross-sectional form.
4. A guard device for the lips of the month, said device comprising a pair of lip covering parts shaped to conform with the contour of the lips, end portions of said parts having inwardly extending adjacent wall portions each joined in a spring-loop providing movement of said parts toward and from each other, said walls being placement from the lips, and the central portions of said parts being open inwardly of adjacent edges thereof to expose the lips fordirect contactwith each other and with an object placed between the lips.
' 5 A lip guard of the character described comprising a pair of parts adapted to be arranged upon and to shield outer surface portions of the lips, and' means projecting at ends of said parts for yieldably coupling said parts to facilitate movement thereof toward and from each other and for maintaining said parts against displacement from the mouth.
6. A lip guard of the character described com- 7 prising a pair of parts adapted to be arranged upon and to shield outer surface portions of the lips, means projecting at ends of said parts for yieldably coupling said parts to facilitate movement thereof toward and from each other and for maintaining said parts against displacement from the mouth, and the central portion of said parts between said means being open throughout the major portion of the length thereof for exposure of inner adjacent portions of the lips to contact one with the other. i I
