Description

(No Model.)
G. H. TAYLOR. Step Ladder.
No. 243,325. Patented June 21, ISSL UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. TAYLOR, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
STEP-LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,325, dated June 21, 1881. Application filed March 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, GEORGE H. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Gincinnati,in the county ofHamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved bracket and hinge for a step-ladder; and it consists in the mode ofcombiningthese two parts substantially as set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing my improvement in position on the step-ladder, which is broken off near its top. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the reverse side of the same, the stile and legs of the ladder being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a top-plan view, partly in section, of my improvements. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the hinge-strap on line 00 as, Fig. 2.
A represents the stile of a step-ladder.
B represents the swinging prop-legs.
0 represents the bracket, which is provided with ears 0 0, through which are pierced screwholes for attaching the same to the step D of the ladder.
E represents a ledge or flange projecting from the side on aline of the top of the bracket 0, which serves as a stop for the hinge G, to limit the outward movement of the legs B.
F represents aboss, which projects outwardly below the rear edge of the stop E. The object of this boss is to provide a sufficient amount of metal upon the pivot-base of the hinge.
G represents a strap or socket hinge, and is made to fit the boss F, as shown in Fig. 3.
f represents a pivot-bolt, which secures the hinge G to the boss F of the bracket.
H H represent straps forming part of the hinge G, between which .the legs B are fitted and securely fastened by screws or otherwise.
Figs. 1 and 2 show the ladder in a braced position. In order to secure and lock it in that position aloop-catch, I, is provided on the lower part of the bracket 0.
L represents a latch pivoted to the legs B, which is provided with two notches or ofi'sets in appropriate places, so as to lock the legs in both the folded and in the braced positions.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong, durable hinge, which will have a limited amountof movement to prevent the spreading of the legs in use, and the latches provided so as to secure the parts in either the opened or closed position.
The parts composing my improvement are cheap, strong, and durable, and afford areliable safeguard against the slipping of the ladder in use, which is often a serious cause of accidents.
I claim- 1. The bracket 0, provided with a boss, F, in combination with a strap or socket hinge, G, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The bracket 0, provided with a boss, F, and stop-plateE, in combination with the straphinge G, substantially as herein set forth.
3. In combination with the rigid stile A and bracket O,'the hinge-stile B, latch L, and loopcatch I, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. H. TAYLOR.
Witnesses J. H. CHAS. SMITH, JNo. E. JoNEs.
