ROLL TRUING MECHANISM FOR WOOD PLANERS Edward Dechau, Wrens, Ga.
Application April 20, 1945, Serial No. 589,397
1 Claim; 1
My invention relates to improvements in mechanism for truing up rolls of wood planers, the primary object in view being to provide a simply constructed mechanism adapted to be interposed between a pair of rolls of a planing machine and embodying means constructed and arranged to be fed along said rolls while the rolls are rotatingto accurately true the same simultaneously and prgressively with a minimum of time and labor.
Other and subordinate objects, also comprehended by my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating my improved mechanism applied,
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation,
Figure 3 is aview in transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, my invention has been shown therein as applied to a pair of upper and lower rolls I, I of a wood planer and which are provided with the usual reduced end journals 2 by means of which the rolls are rotatably and removably mounted in the planer to be driven, all in a manner well understood in the art and therefore not deemed necessary to illustrate or further describe.
According to my invention, a frame 3 is provided embodying a pair of fiat, end cross-bars 4 connected together by a longitudinal, central front track bar 5 secured to said end bars 4 by lateral end flanges 6 on the track bar 5 and bolts 1. The track bar 5 is provided at its front with laterally extending side edge tracks 8 preferably V-shape in cross-section and also with a longitudinal, concave front groove 9 between said tracks 8. The end cross-bars 4 are provided with coplanar, flat, enlarged yokes I0 forming forwardly offset end extensions of said bars 4 and provided with V- notches I I in the outermost edges thereof, whereby said yokes I0 are adapted to straddle the journals 2 at opposite ends of the rolls I, I and to lie against the ends of said rolls so that the track bar 5 is interposed and centered between the rolls I, I' of said pair with its front in the plane of said rolls I, I, substantially.
Slidably mounted on the tracks 8 is a rectangular tool carriage I2 having a rear, convex, center guide rib I3 slidably fitted in the groove 9, and a pair of guideWaYs I4 upon opposite sides of said rib I3 slidably fitting over the tracks 8 and con-' forming in shape therewith.
A pair of bar-type, cutting tools I5, similar to the usual lathe bits, are mounted on the front face of said carriage I2 to extend laterally and vertically oppositely from said carriage into Work- (Cl. LIZ-42) til 2 ing engagement with the pair of rolls I, I in substantially radial positions relative to said rolls. Clamping blocks I6 bolted to said carriage, as at H, secure said tools I5 in place for adjustment toward or from said rolls I.
A screw shaft I8, with a hand wheel I9 on one end thereof, is rotatably mounted in a bearing bracket 20 on one end of the track bar 5 against endwise movement and threaded through the guide rib I3 of the tool carriage I2, said shaft being accommodated in the groove 9.
Preferably, the tools l5 are staggered, relatively to dispose the same upon opposite sides of the transverse center of the tool carriage I2 to distribute the stresses and strains to the cutting throughout the carriage I2. As will be seen in Figure 3, the track bar 5 extends beyond the end cross-bars 4, and the yokes ID are provided with spacing bosses 2| between the same and the ends of the rolls I, I so that the tools I5 may cut from end to end of said rolls I.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood. While the rolls I, l are rotating, the hand wheel I9 is operated to rotate shaft I8 and slide the tool carriage 12 back and forth along said tracks 8 to correspondingly move the tools I5, thereby truing the rolls I simultaneously. It may be explained that the invention is designed to be used in connection with wood planers in which the rolls I, I' are driven and the upper roll I of the pair is vertically adjustable against spring tension and whereby the yokes Il! may be posi-r, tioned relative to the journals 2 as described while the rolls are mounted in the planer.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible to modification both as regards structure and combination of parts, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
Roll truing mechanism for use with a pair of parallel laterally spaced rolls having end journals and adapted to be rotated comprising a pair of 3 shaft rotatably mounted in said bracket against endwise movement and threaded through said carriage to extend along the track bar, and a, hand wheel on said shaft, said track bar being longer than the length of said rolls between the journals 5 of the rolls to permit the carriage to carry said tools to said ends of said rolls, said notched ends being offset on said bars to dispose the notches in a common plane with said cutting tools whereby said tools are adapted to cut in the common 10 plane of said rolls.
EDWARD DECHAU.
