GRINDER AND DRESSER FOR METAL ROLLS IN THEIR HOUSINGS.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM EA HARRIS, of Niles,in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grrindersand` Dressers for Metal Rolls in Their Housings, of which `the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. This invention relates to a device, for the grinding, dressing and polishing of sheet-mill and other metal rolls, without either removal from their housings, orseparation of said rolls out of drive friction touch with each other. Thus in grinding, dressing and polishing, the one roll of each pair, (preferably the bottom one) is alone driven direct from the engine, and the upper roll is indirectly driven by its tension friction contact with the lower one, thus avoiding the delay and labor incident'to removals and reseating of said rolls, and their consequent incidental separate seating and driving while dressing; and the invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims. Figure I is an elevated, vertical section taken n line I-I, Fig. Il, and shows a sheet mill, with the rolls that are mounted in their i tight pressure friction contact 17 with that housing, adjusted in friction contact with each other. It also shows the adjustable rest bar, with an adjustable block resting thereon, in which block are carried and groove seated dovetailed emery dressing blocks, that simultaneously hold each other to their work on both the upper and lower roll. Fig. II is a front View of the same. Fig. III is a vertical sec-- tion of the intermediate emery block holder, as shown in Figs. I and II, and shows the dovetail emery blocks inserted therein, in position for simultaneously dressing both the lower and upper rolls. ltalso shows the water tubes and chambers, the contents of which preventv the heating of said blocks.

10 represents the vertical housing head plates, and 1l arc open apertures in the middie of said head plates, yin which are adjustably seated and held, the sectional coadjutary section bearing blocks l2. The said section bearing blocks in the aggregate regulate and constitute the respective lower and upper journal bearings 13 and 13 of the lower and upper housed journals 14 and 14 of the lower roll 15 and the upper roll 15. The journal bearings of said upper roll are adjusted to cause a close friction contact of the periphery of said roll with the periphery of the lower roll, which lower roll is driven by means of its projecting drivevarbor 16 and its usual `coupling connection, thereby to the engine driveishfaft, (not shown) or to the drive arbors of intervening rolls, (when as is usual a succession of said rolls in line have associate drives.) The lower roll or series of rolls are thus driven direct from the engine, and as the periphery of said upper roll is broughtV into of the lower roll, byk means of the downward adjustment of the vertical set screws 18, which work in their screw seats 19 within the enlarged convex heads20 of the aforesaid' vhousing head plates 10, the feet of said setscrews, pressing against the metal foot plates 22, that are bedded in the follower pressure beams 23, the said follower beams enforce a pressure drive on the aforesaid sectional bearing blocks 12, Within their bed seats 12 in the vertical housing head plates 10, so as to drive said sectional bearing blocks 12 closer together and thus to bring the respective journal bearings of the associate rolls into closer approachment together, so as to adjust and enforce suiicient friction contact of the periphery of said lower drive roll 15, to the periphery of the upper associate roll 15', to insure the rotation of the upper roll from said friction contact without any direct drive from the engine to said upper roll,
24 represents the rest-bar, the slide bearer tenon ends 25 of which are adj ustably seated IOC in the respective slotways 26, in the aforesaid head plates 10, and which rest-bar may be removed from the oneside of the rollstotheother, and seated in the like slots on said side; also the said rest bar with its coadjntant devices may be duplicated when required on each side of the rolls. 27 represents integral bearer lugs that project from the bottom of said rest bar adjacent to its ends, and 28 are set-screws, that are adjustable by means of their wrench heads 29, in their screw seats 30 in said lugs to enforce the entrance of their retainer ends in such ones of the locking recesses 3l, as rightly adjust the elevation of said rest bar, for the carriage of my devices for grinding, dressing and polishing the rolls, or at a diverse elevation for resting the sheets or other material on their approach to and departure from the rolls, in the course of rolling. 32 represents an inverted T slot that is located in the upper moiety of said rest-bar, and extends from end to end thereof.A 33 is a screw holder head block, the bearer shoulders 34 of which rest and travel on said rest bar, and its downward extension inverted T' foot 35, is housed and travels in said inverted T slot in said rest bar. 36 is a set screw, that is operated by means ot' its wrench head 37, to its adjustment in its screw seat 38 in said head block, for the adjustment hold of the roll dresser block holder 39, the butt end of which rests and is shifted on the aforesaid rest bar 24. 40 represents the dual inclined concave presentation end of said block holder, in which dual, inclined, concave end are located upper and lower dovetail recessed housings 41, in which are inserted and held the upper and lower grinding and dresser dovetail blocks 42, which are preferably made of emery, but may be of any other suitable material. The dresser surfaces of said blocks present concave faces 43 that accord with the convex peripheries of the rolls they dress.
In the adjustment of the set screw 36, care is taken not to force the roll dresser block holder 39 too far forward, so as to separate the two rolls and thereby destroy the contact friction between them that makes the driver bottom roll drive the upper roll. The said block holder, however, can be forced sufliciently forward by the set screw 36, to cause abundant attrition from its emery or other dresser blocks 42 on the rolls in course of dressing, as the vertical set-screws 18, that surmount, set and control the journal bearings of the rolls, and through said bearings the rolls themselves, can be set to enforce extreme contact friction tension between said rolls.
44 represents a water chamber, the dual branches 45 from which come freely in contact with the back of both the dresser blocks 42, and prevent the heating of the same in the course of dressing the rolls. 46 is the supply water channel, that passes through the dresser block holder to said water chamber,
nut coupler 50. 51 is au outlet junction tube,
one end of which is inserted within said drain channel 47 that passes from said Water chamber 44 to the discharge outlet through said block holder, and to the other end of said junction tube is secured the drain hose 52 by means of the nut coupler 53.
It will be seen that in the above described device of holding the dresser blocks, means are provided for grinding, dressing and polishing the rolls without removal from their mill housings, and thus the great expense of roll dressing lathes is avoided, as are also the heavy labor and loss of time in the removal of the rolls from and back to their mill housings. It will also be seen that a single roll is alone driven direct from the engine and drives its companion roll.
I have shown a single roll dresser holder to each pair of rolls, butI do not confine myself to said single application of said dresser block holder, for it is evident that a series of said dresser blocks with their holders may by the means above shown and described, be simultaneously used without any departure from the essential features of my invention, as said plurality of use would or will simply be a multiplication of said especial parts.
I do not conne myself to the use of any one material of which to construct the grinding, dressing and polishing blocks; for While emery, and also steel with sharp tile attrition cutter surfaces have been especially mentioned, as well adapted for their construction, yet also any other suitable sharp, quick cutting material may be used, and applied in accordance with the general tenor of the invention.
While I have shown and described specific means for applying the dresser to rolls, I do not confine myself to such means as other arrangements can be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention, such for instance as that described and claimed in my divisional application, Serial No. 528,331, filed November 9, 1894.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a device for dressing rolls while running in their housings, the combination of the rolls, a block provided with concave grinding faces and a chamber through which water`is IOO TIO
adapted to pass, and suitable means for holdj ing the said device againstA the faces of the rolls: substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a grinder and dresser for metal rolls, while running in their housings, thecombination with a pair of rolls of a rest bar 24, adjustable in the slotways 26 in said head blocks, the bearer lugs 27, the set screws 28, the roll dresser block holder 39, and upper and lower dresser blocks in said holder, substantially as described.
3. In a grinder and dresser for metal rolls, the combination with a pair of rolls of a rest bar 24 provided with inverted T- slot 32, the bearer lugs 27, and set screws 28, the setting holder block 33, having the inverted T-foot 35, the set screw 36, the dresser block holder 39, having the double concave inclined presentation end 40, and the dresser blocks that simultaneously dress both rolls; substantially as described.
4. In a grinder and dresser for rolls, the combination with a pair of rollsy of a rest bar 24, provided with the inverted T -slot 32, the bearer lugs 2,7, the set screws 28, the setting holder block 33, having the inverted T-foot 35, the set screw 36, the dresser block holder 39, having the double concave inclined presentation end, the dresser blocks in said holder, and the water chamber and supply in contact with said dresser blocks, substantially as described. In a grinder and dresser for metalrolls, the combination with a pair of rolls of an adj ustable rest bar 24, the adjustable screw set roll dresser holder block 39, having the double concave inclined presentation end, the concave faced dresser blocks bedded in said end, the water chamber in said dresser blocks, the supply hose 49 having the nut coupler 50, the junction tube 48 and water channel 46 that supply said chamber, the drain channel 47, the outlet junction tube 51, and thev drain hose 52 secured by the nut coupler 53, that drain said water chamber, substantially as described.

In a grinder and dresser for metal rolls, the combination with a rest bar 24, provided with the invertedT- slot 32, the bearer lugs 27, and-set screws 28, the setting holderblock 33 having the inverted T- foot 35 that travels in said slot 32, and set screw `36, the dresser block holder 3,9, having the double concave inclined presentation end 40, provided with the dual housing dovetail slots 4l, the water 'chamber 44, with its extension branches 45,
