GRINDING ATTACHMENT FOR BAND-SAW MILLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Application filed February 10, 1911. Serial No. 607,881.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jar DELL Gr: Born a citizen of the United States, residing at ()nalaska, in the county of Polk and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding Attachments for BandS-aw Mills; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improved grinding attachments for band saw wheels, band re-saw wheels and, other pulleys.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and etlicient grinding apparatus in which the grinding element is held firm and stationary and which is constructed to reduce the expense and time of truing up band mill wheels.
Another object of the invention is to provide a grinding attachment of this character in which the grinding element may be tilted to dispose it at'any desired angle relatively to the face of the wheel to be ground.
WVith these and otherobjects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangementof parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a band saw mill equipped with this attachment; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment detached; Fig.-3 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 4 is an end elevation thereof; Fig. is a tr ns- "verse vertical section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2; F ig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the grinding elements.
. In the embodiment illustrated, this im proved grinding, device is shown applied to 'a' band saw mill, mounted on a suitable frame-A, in which .is journalod the band saw wheelB, over which a band saw C passes.
A grinding machine frame 1 is secured to the base plate of the'mill directly below the Wheel B, as shown in. Fig. 1, being arranged longitudinall across the path of said Wheel and preferably constructed as shown, having laterally extending apertured arms as 2 for connection with the mill base plate by bolts or inany other suitable mannor. Upwardly projecting ape'rtured ears as 3 are arranged on said. arms for a purpose to be described.
frame 4., and
A rectangular frame 4 is mounted on the frame 1 and is adjustable transversely thereof by means of four screw threaded bolls as 5, which extend through the ears 3 and engage laterally extending lugs as (3 on the 'll(l! are operable to adjust the frame 1 to bring it into alinement with the band wheel 13. These logs as (3 are also provided with vertically disposed bolts as 7, which pass through said lugs and engage the frame 1 to lock said frame t firmly against longitudinal movement. Mounted to slide longitudinally on the side bars of the frame 4: is a frame 8, preferably rectangular in form and having a depending screw threaded apertured lug 9 engaged with a right and left hand screw threaded rod 10 mounted in bearings at opposite ends of the frame 4, said-rod extending beyond said frame 4 and provided at one end with a hand wheel 11 and at its other end with a pulley 1:2 to provide for the operation of the rod either manually or automatically, whcreby the grinding element may be moved across the face of the band wheel while being ground. 7
A frame 13 is mounted for longitudinal adjustment in the frame 8 in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of said frame 8. This frame 13 is provided at opposite ends with depending screw threaded aperturod lugs as 14, which are engaged with a screw threaded rod 15 mounted in hearings on the end members of the frame 8 and one end of which projects beyond said frame 8 and is provided with a hand wheel 16 for turning said rod 15 and adjusting the frame 13 longitudinally of the frame 8. This frame 13 is provided at opposite ends with upwartflly projecting apertured ears as 17 for a purpose to be described.
A grinding member 18, preferably in the form of a rectangular element is dctachably mounted in a tilting frame 19, the end members 20 of which are preferably substantially triangular in shape, as shown in Figs. 1, 4 and 5, with their apices pivotally connected to the apertured cars as 17 of the frame 13.
Vertically disposed adjustable screw threaded rods 21 and 22 are connected at their upper ends to the opposite sides of the end members 20 and have a screw threaded engagement with the frame 13, and are provided with set nuts as 23 for locking the. rods, and consequently the grinding elements 18 in the desired position relatively to the face of the wheel to be ground.
The grinding elements may be made of iron, carborundum, stone, emery, brick or any suitable material and are interchangeable, having their working faces longitudinally concaved to fit wheels of varying diameters.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanationj Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as claimed.
I claim as my invention:
1, A band saw mill grinding attachment comprising a supporting base, a rectangular frame mounted for lateral adjustment on said base, a frame mounted to slide longitudinally on said rectangular frame and having a depended screw threaded apertured lug, a screw threaded revoluble rod mounted in said rectangular frame and engaged with said apertured lug to-move said sliding frame longitudinally, a threaded rod mounted on said sliding frame and. extending across said first mentioned. rod ,in a plane above it, a frame mounted on said last mentioned rod and adjustable transversely relative to said rectangular frame, a frame mounted to tilt longitudinally on said transversely adjustable frame, a grinding ele- ,mcnt secured to said tilting frame, said grinding element removably secured. to said tilting frame, and means. for holding said tilting framei ,.a djustable osition.
2. 'A band sytv mill grining attachment comprising a supporting'base having upwardly projecting apertured cars, a rectangular frame having laterally extending apertured lugs, bolts in said lugs for securing said frame to said base, set screws mount ed on said apertured ears for engagement with said lugs readjust said frame laterally relatively to said base, a'frame mounted to slide longitudinally? on said rectangular frame, and having a'depending screw threaded apertured lu screw 'threaded revoluble rod mounted longitudinallyin said rectangular frameand enga'ged with the apertured lug in said sliding frame and operable to move said frame longitudinally, a screw threaded rod mounted on said sliding frame and extending across said firsbmentioned rod in a plane above it, a frame mounted on said last-mentioned rodof said sliding frame and adjustable transversely relative to said rectangular frame of said rod and moving in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of said sliding frame, a frame mounted to tilt longitudinally on said transverscly adjustable frame, a grinding element secured to said tilting frame, and means for holding said tilting frame in adjusted position. 0
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
