HOLDER Foa CARBON PAPERS Harry Wadsworth Wrigley, deceased, late of Manchester, England, by Sarah EllenWrigley executrx, Withington, Manchester, England Application September 7, 1944, Serial No. 553,042 In Great Britain February 22, 1943 `1 claim. (01; 282-29) This invention relates to holders for use in typewriting machines and more particularly to the provision on the holder of means for holding one or more carbon sheets in assembled relationship.
It has heretofore been proposed to provide a holder for carbon sheets with its upper'end folded over on itself to form a flap and provided with one or more longitudinal cuts or slits and to affix beneath said flap a downwardly projecting tab adapted to be folded over the flap and inserted inthe longitudinal cuts or slits therein. It has also been proposed to provide a holder having its upper end folded over on itself with a plurality of vertically disposed slots both in the backing sheet and flap, the carbon sheets for use in said holderbeing also provided with a correspending number of slots, said carbons being held in position by aflexible member adapted to be interlaced through the several slots.
The objects of ythis invention are, amongst others which will be obvious, to provide a more simple means for holding one or more carbon sheets in position; to economise time in assembling and dismantling a` plurality of sheets; to protect the carbon sheets through minimum handling and to effect an economy in the use of carbon sheets, and to this-end according.- to this invention it is proposed to die cut the holder or backing sheet to provide either at the top and/or side or sides one or more pairs of hanging tabs arranged to project outwardly towards the edge of the holder and to provide the carbon sheets to be used therewith with a corresponding number of slits or slots (at the top or side or sides) adapted to be hung on the tabs.
According to a modified form of this invention it is proposed to provide at the top or side or sides of the holder tabs which are directed towards or away from each other.
According to a further modification of this invention one or more inwardly directed tabs may be provided at the top and/or side or sides of the holder, in combination with the holding tabs, said inwardly directed tab or tabs being located nearer the edge of the top or side or sides than the holding tabs.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate this invention;
Figure 1 is a view illustrating one embodiment of this invention.
Figures 2, 3 and 4, illustrate three further modications.
Figure 5 is a View of the protective strip.
2 f Figure 6 illustrates the protective strip to a holder with carbon sheet. i i
Figures 7 and 8 illustrate a modified form of holder provided with protective means formed integrally therewith, and i Figure 9 is a view illustrating a further modification. y 1
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure l, I is the holder or backing sheet provided adjacent its upper edge ywith two tabs 2, hereafter called the hanging tabs, produced by die stamping or in any other convenient manner,
applied said tabs being directed upwardly and outwardly The holder may, as shown in Figure 1, be provided with two inwardly directed Lholding tabs 5 or 5a placed at thetop or side or sides of the holder which may be used in combination with the hanging tabs 2, 2a, said inwardly directed tabs 5, 5a being located nearer the edge of the top or side or sides than the hanging tabs, said tabs being placed over the edges of the carbon sheets to assist in preventing said sheets from becoming unhooked.
When using holders of narrow width with correspondingly narrow carbons and papers, the holder may be provided with but one inwardly directed tab 5 as shown in Figure 2.
The holder or backing sheet is preferably, but
not necessarily, provided with a iiap 6 adapted to turn over on top of the tabs.
According to a simplied form of this invention the holder may be furnished with two tabs 1 or 1a directed towards each other said tabs being arranged adjacent the top or side edge or edges of the holder as shown in Figure 3, the carbon sheets 3 being provided with suitably disposed slots or holes 8 or 8a.
According to a modification of the above the tabs 1 or 'la may, if desired, be directed away from each other as shown in Figure 4.
As with careless handling the carbon sheets may tend to become torn at the slots 4 it is proposed to provide means for preventing this such as by the provision of a narrow strip or stout paper or the like l0 (Figure 5) said strip being creased as at Il and provided with slots I2 corresponding with the slots 4 in the carbon sheets. This strip I 0 is rst hung on to the tabs 2 the upper edgevl3 being placed under the tabs 5 as shown on the right of Figure 6 and then folded over on itself @to ,cover the tabs f2 :and also the tabs 5 or iffdesired the-upper edge l-'4 rof thecover part may be placed under the tabs 5 as shown on the left of Figure 6.
According to the modification .fillustreated :in Figures '7 and 8 which is devised to attain the same end as is obtained byt-hefstrip2Hl1but=with out utilising a part formed separately ifrom ithe holder, the holder is furnishedwithihangingtabs I5 having a length approximately twicethat of the tabs 2, the locking tabs 5 arefthe ,Sameasein the embodiment previously described. The top i edge of the holder I is provided Witha ap -6 adapted to be turned fdown on top of the tabs il-anjd ysaidrapziszfurnished immediately above the/elongated tabs I-'5 Ywith two pairs of Aparallel :slits '.lf through which the'tabs t5 are threaded faftertherequired number of carbon sheets have been hung on the tabs :I5 and locked under'the tabs as shown in Figure '7.
The provision of the strip I as also the fflap 5B and interlocking tabs .l'5 minimise the :possi- 'bility-'ofthacarbonsheets,being torn atthe slots .4 andffurtherenable the top or original sheet of ipaperztotbe more correctly .positioned relatively to the Y under rsheets.
twill'beappreciated that'if desired, in the place -`o'f-rthe lvarious tabs lbeing cutout of the fhol'der'itself, they maybe "formed from Apieces of material fstuck on or otherwise applied to Vthe holder in the desired positions Aas shown, ffor example, in Figure '9.
'The holder may bemade Qfany suitable material suchas stoutpaper orCelluloidgbutif made pf the latter lthe holder .would vno,t-,.b e *provided witha vfolded over Eportion at its top end,
It will be understood that the number-of hangingand holding or locking `tabs provided. on any :holder willfdepend to some extent ion jthe width :Qfethe holder and :the carbon sheets l:to :be .used therewith.
What is claimed is:
A holder for holding carbon sheets in assembled relationship for use in typewriting machines comprising carbon sheets and a backing sheet furnished adjacent one of its edges with a plurality of outwardly projecting tabs coherent with said backing sheet along a `:irst line parallel to and spacedifromsaid edge and-plurality of inwardly projecting tabs coherent with said backing sheet --along a second line parallel to said rst line and nearertozsaidgedge, the carbon sheets to be used with said backing sheet being provided with a pairfofslitsihavingla 1ength slightly greater than itheamaximumwidth of said outwardly projecting rtabsfsaiwslitsbeing provided on a line parallel Jin-thefedgeiofisaidlcarbon sheet and spaced from esadedgefa distance substantially equal to the distance between said rst and second lines to enablesaid carbons to be hung on the outwardly projecting tabs and the free edge of said car- :bonsitozbe placedunder the'inwardly projecting ftabs, :and :an elongated substantially rectangular stripfof :materiakhaving :a length equal to that Qfsaidedgeeofzthebacking sheet and being hingedly integral with the latter along one of yits longitudinal edges,-said;strip having a width slightly ,.excess :of v:the distance vbetween said rst line .a-ndfsaidedge ogfsaid backing sheet to form a ap foldablealong-saidedgeupon said tabs to conceal `and pratect the same.
