. upper end of this sheet is of Watkins, in the county of Schuyler,-in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carbon-Holders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the carbon-holder shown in my Letters Patent No. 555,748, dated March 3, 1896.
The objects of my presentinvention are, first, to provide a carbon-holder which shall permit the carbon-sheets to be more readily attached to and removed from the holder, and thus facilitate the operation of removing said sheets when required; secondly, to allow the carbon-sheets to be manipulated more conveniently andwithout handling the sheet, and, thirdly, to render the carbon-holder more convenient and efficient in its general operation; and to these ends the invention consists in the improved construction hereinafter described.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a. plan view of the upper or main portion of the holder in position to receive the carbon-sheets- Fig. 2 shows said holder complete with the carbon-sheet at- Fig. 8 is a plan view of the upper part of the carbon-holder in condition for being introduced into the type-writing machine. as hereinafter described. At opposite sides of this hook the strip bis widened and has the lower margins thereat loose from the back plate to form downwardly-proj ectin g flaps (Z (Z. The lower edge of the fastened portion of the strip b serves as a gage or stop in placing the the holder, in which operation the top edge of said sheet is inserted under the flaps d d and placed against the fast edge of the strip, and this causes the sheet to be adjusted to its requisite position on the back sheet A. To facilitate said adjustment, I provide the fastened portion of the strip b with tongues b b for holding the flaps d d in upturned position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, while placing the carbon-sheet against the aforesaid gage.
For connecting the carbon-sheet S to the holder 1) I attach to the upper end of said sheet a tab e, provided with a transverse slot e, receiving throughit the hook c, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
To allow the carbon-sheet to be shifted longitudinally, so as to cause the line of writing to come between the previously-worn lines in said sheet, and thus prolong the utility of said sheet, I provide the strip 12 with an additional inverted- U-shaped slit inside of the primary correspondingly-shaped slit and extending farther toward the lower end of said strip, which additional slit forms a secondary tongue or hook c'for connecting to it the slotted tab 6 of the carbon-sheet. The same effect, however, may be obtained by providing the tab c with two transverse slots e e as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. I do not limit myself to the use'of the slotted tab eon the carbon-sheet S, as the connection of said sheet to the holder may be accomplished by various interlocking devices or catches on said parts. One of said modifications con sists of lateral projections c on the tab eand two tongues or hooks c c on the strip 12, engaging said projections, as represented in Fig. 5 of the drawings. A further modification consists of a hook it formed on the tab e, inserted into a transverse slot 71. in a loose portion of the strip 12, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. In either case, however, I prefer to attach to the upper end of the back sheet a a flap f, which is provided with an eye f, by which to suspend the carbon-holder when not ICO applied to the type-Writing machine. The chief purpose, however, of this flap is to fold over and cover the carbon-sheet attachments, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and thereby prevent interference with said attachments during the passage of the carbon-sheet holder through the type-writing machine.
To obviate the necessity of handling the carboursheet, I attach to the lower end of said sheet a tab or suitable thun1b-piece 1', by which to manipulate the sheet.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination, with the back sheet and carbon-sheet, of a'strip secured across the upper end of said back sheet and formed with a catch, and a tab attached to the carbon-sheet and formed to engage said catch.
2. The combination, with the back sheet and carbon-sheet, of a stiff strip extending across the upper end of said back sheet and fastened thereto, upwardly-projecting hooks formed integral with said strip and a tab attached to the carbon-sheet and perforated to receive through it the aforesaid hook.
3. The combination, with the back sheet and carbon-sheet, of a strip pasted across the upper end of said back sheet and formed with an upwardly-projectiug hook in the center of its length and with flaps at opposite sides of said hook, and a tab attached to the carbonsheet and perforated to receive through it the aforesaid hook as set forth.
i. The combination, with the back sheet and carbon-sheet, of a strip pasted across the upper end of said back sheet and formed with a catch, a tab attached to the carbon-sheet and formed to engage said catch, and a flap attached to the upper end of the back sheet to fold upon and cover the carbon-sheet attachments as set forth.
5; The combination, with the back sheet and carbon-sheet, of a strip pasted across the upper end of said back sheet and formed with an upwardly-projecting hook in the center of its length and with flaps at opposite sides of said hook, a tab attached to the carbon-sheet and perforated for the reception of said hook, and a flap attached to the upper end of the back sheet to fold uponand cover the aforesaid hook as set forth:

The combination with the back sheet and carbon-sheet, of a strip pasted across the upper end of the back sheet to gage the carbonsheet, and provided with an upward-projecting hook, and a tab attached to the upper end of the carbon-sheet and provided with a slot receiving through it the aforesaid hook as set forth. a
7. The combination with the back sheet and carbon-sheet, of a strip pasted across the upper end of the back sheet to gage the carhon-sheet and provided with aplurality of upward-proj ectin g hooks located at difierent distances from the top edge of the back sheet, and a tab attached to the upper end of the carbon-sheet and provided with a slot for receiving through it either of the aforesaid hooks as set forth.
8. The combination with the back sheet and carbon-sheet, of a strip pasted across the upper end of said back sheet and having a loose central portion provided with an inverted- U shaped slit forming an upward-projecting hook, flaps projecting downwardly at opposite sides of the aforesaid hook and tongues on the aforesaid strip adapted to hold the downwardly-projecting flaps in upturned position, a flap attached to the upper end of the back sheet and covering the aforesaid hook, a tab attached to the upper end of the carbonsheet and provided with a slot receiving through it the aforesaid hook, and a tab on the lower end of the carbon-sheet for manipulating the same as set forth.
