This invention relates to writing forms, and particularly to a carbon set form comprising one or more sheets of writing paper in combination with a carbon transfer sheet. An object of the invention is to provide an improved carbon set form in which means are provided for readily separating the respective sheets of the form from one another even while the form is retained in a business machine such as the typewriter.
One of the principal difiiculties in the use of carbon set forms is that when a set of forms is placed around the platen of a business machine such as the typewriter it is difficult for the operator to separate the sheets to permit correction of errors. This is particularly true of form sets of the type in which one edge of the form set has received an adhesive or other bonding material to retain the several sheets of the form set together.
It is a usual practice to provide form sets in which the paper sheets that receive the writings are provided with a stub along one end thereof. Carbon transfer sheets are placed between the paper sheets and have their edges fastened to the stub of the paper sheets. To provide for normal separation of the paper sheets from the carbon transfer sheets, the stub ends of the paper sheets are grasped in one hand and the opposite ends of the sheets are grasped in the other hand with a severing motion between the hands so that the paper sheets are separated along the perforated lines forming the stub and the paper sheets and carbon sheets are thereby separated.
When forms of this kind are used in the typewriter, it is often necessary for the operator to make erasures for error correction, but the end of the form set that is available is the end that has the paper sheets and carbon transfer sheets fastened together. Thus, it is difficult for an operator to separate the sheets and make the individual paper sheets available for correction of errors.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide paper sheets and carbon transfer sheets with means which provide for their separation along one edge thereof.
It is still a further object of the invention to providea carbon set form in which the separation of a paper sheet from the set form or of acarbon transfer sheet and a paper sheet from the set form can be easily and selectively made by the operator using the form.
Further objects and advantages will become 2 apparent from the drawings and the following description.
Figure 1 is a perspective elevational view of a carbon set form incorporating features of this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a corner of the form illustrated in Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate the manner in which the carbon set form is used to provide for separation of the paper sheets and the carbon transfer sheets.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a corner of the paper sheet.
Figure 6 is a plan view of a corner of the carbon transfer sheet.
Figure 7 is a plan view of a slightly modified form of carbon transfer sheet.

In Figure 1 there is illustrated a carbon set form In that consists of the paper sheets ll, I2, and I3, and the carbon transfer sheets l4 and 15 that are placed between the respective paper sheets. The carbon set form of Figure 1 is therefore adapted for making an original writing sheet II and copy sheets 12 and [3 of the original writing on sheet ll. The. upper edges Ila, l2a and I3a of the paper sheets and the upper edges 14a and I5a of the carbon transfer sheets are secured together in any suitable manner as by means of an adhesive placed along the upper transverse edges. Thus, the paper sheet and the carbon transfer sheets that make up the carbon set form 1 10 are secured together along one edge thereof.
The paper sheets ll, I2, and I3 are each provided with a line of perforations Ilb, 12b, and 13b respectively that extend transversely of the form to and parallel to the upper edges of the paper and carbon transfer sheets.
The lower ends and of the carbon sheets [4 and I5 respectively are positioned inwardly of the lower ends H0, 120, and 130 of the respective paper sheets.
The form thus far described is adapted for having the paper sheets severed along the lines of perforations Hb, I2b, and 13b so that the paper sheets H, 12, and [3 can be separated from the stub portion 20 provided on the ends of the paper sheets to which the carbon transfer sheets I4 and [5 are secured, thereby prov 3 viding for separation of the carbon transfer sheets from the paper sheets.
When using a carbon set form of the type heretofore described, the stub end portion 20 i used as the lead end portion of the carbon set form in threading it through a business machine such as the typewriter. Thus, the stub end portion 20 is the end portion that is available to the operator of the typewriting machine for separation of the sheets from one another in the event correction of errors is required.
In this invention each of the paper sheets II and I2 is provided with a notch I Id and I2d. The bottom copy sheet I3 need not have a notch provided in it but can have the notch if desired. The notches Nd and [2d extend inwardly from one longitudinal edg of the paper sheets II and I2 and are in superposed vertical alignment with one another. Also, the notches I Id and I2d are positioned adjacent the upper edge of the adhesively joined edges of the paper sheets and th carbon transfer sheets.
The carbon transfer sheets I4 and I5 are provided with the notches Md and l5d respectively that also extend inwardly from one longitudinal edge of the sheets. The notches Mid and I5d are positioned adjacent the adhesively joined edges of the paper sheets and the carbon transfer sheets, and are in vertical superposed alignment with one another when the sheets are disposed one on the other.
As more clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 4, the notches Md and I5d in the carbon transfer sheets I4 and I5 are positioned in that portion of the sheets that is between the adhesively joined edges of the paper sheets and carbon transfer sheets and the notches I Id and I2d of the paper sheets II and I2. The notches in the paper sheets I I and I2 are positioned below the notches in the carbon transfer sheets I4 and I5 relative to the upper edge of the carbon sheet form so that the notches Md and I5d in the carbon transfer sheets are beneath the tab portions He and I2e in the paper sheets II and I2 when the paper sheet is positioned on a carbon transfer sheet. All of the notches or cut out portions in the paper sheets II, I2, and I3 are disposed one above the other when the, paper sheets are disposed in stacked relationship, as are the notches Md and I5d of the carbon transfer sheets.
In separating the several sheets of the carbon set form It from one another along their adhesively joined edges, the operator can select the sheets that will be severed.
For example, in Figure 3, if the operator places the point of an instrument, such as a pencil 25, in the area provided by the notch I Id in the paper sheet I I, and then moves the pencil parallel to the line of perforations III) or substantially so, the pencil point will pass beneath the paper sheet I I on the upper surface of the carbon transfer sheet I4. After the point of the pencil 25 has thus passed beneath the paper sheet I I, the pencil can be moved upwardly to the upper end of the form set and thereby sever the top paper sheet I I from the remaining sheets of the form set.
However, should the operator desire to leave the carbon sheet I4 attached to the paper sheet II, the operator will proceed as before in placing the point of a pencil on the carbon sheet I4 in the area of the notch I Id. However, as illustrated in Figure 4, instead of moving the point of the pencil 25 directly parallel to the line of perforations I Ib, the operator will move the point of the pencil parallel to the longitudinal edge 30 of the carbon transfer sheet I4 until the point of the pencil enters the notch Md. The operator will then move the point of the pencil parallel to the upper edge of the form set II) or parallel to the line of perforation IIb and upwardly against the adhesively secured edges of the form set to sever the upper edge of the carbon sheet I4 and the paper sheet I I from the remaining portion of the carbon set form, leaving the carbon sheet l4 still attached to the paper sheet II.
Also, by selectively using the notches Nd and I4d in the paper sheets II and I4, the operator can individually separate the paper sheets and th carbon sheets from one another throughout the entire depth of the form set.
The carbon sheets I4 and I5 have an upper edge portion 3| that is uncoated with carbon, thus providin for a portion of the carbon transfer sheet that can be grasped without smudging the fingers of the operator.
Also, the uncoated edge portion 31 of the carbon transfer sheet provides means to permit erasure on the original or copy sheets. To make the erasure, the uncoated marginal portion of the carbon transfer sheet is folded in between the paper sheet and the carbon transfer sheet and disposed under the point at which the erasure is to be made. The uncoated portion protects the copy sheet from the carbon coating and the erasure may be made without the use of a shield. When the erasure has been made on the original sheet and on the copy sheet, the carbon sheet is replaced to its original position by grasping the uncoated portion of the carbon sheet or the tab formed between the notch Md and the upper edge of the carbon sheet, or in the instance of the modification shown in Figure 8, the tab 44, to replace the carbon sheet to its original position.
In Figure 7 ther is illustrated a slightly modified arrangement of the carbon sheet in which t-ie entire carbon transfer sheet 35 is coated. However, the coating on the transfer sheet has no effect upon the operation of the invention tov provide for the separation of the several sheets of a form set.
In Figure 8 there is illustrated a slightlymodified arrangement of a carbon set form in which the paper sheets 40 are provided with a slit 4I that extends diagonally inwardly toward the center of the paper sheets from one longitudinal edge thereof. The slits 4I in the several paper sheets that comprise the set form are vertically aligned with on another when in superposed relationship as previously described with reference to the notches Nd and lid.
'lhe carbon sheets of the carbon set form illustrated in Figure 8 are also provided with slits 42 that extend diagonally inwardly toward the center of the carbon sheet from a longitudinal edge thereof.
The slits 42 are positioned out of alignment with the slits 4|, but the several slits 42 of the several carbon sheets are in vertical alignment with one another when the carbon sheets are in superposed relationship.
The use of slits M and 42 provides substantially triangular shaped tabs 43 and 44 that can be grasped by the operator. This is particularly useful in connection with the carbon sheets when their upper edges are uncoated as illustrated in Figure 6, the slits 42 being provided in the uncoated portion of the sheet.
In Figure 9. there is illustrated a further modifled arrangement in which the notches of Figure 1 and the slits of Figure 8 are combined into a notch and slit arrangement illustrated in Figure 9.
The paper sheet 50 is provided with a notch 51 having a slit 52 extending diagonally inwardly toward the center of the sheet from the notch thus providing a triangular shaped tab 54 that can be grasped by the operator.
Similarly, the carbon sheet beneath the paper sheet 50 is provided with a notch 55 that has a slit 56 extending diagonally inwardly toward the center of the carbon sheet, thus forming a triangular shaped tab 51 that can be grasped by the operator to prevent smudging the fingers when the upper edge of the carbon sheet is uncoated, as illustrated in Figure 6.
It will be understood that the invention is capab-le of modification to adapt it to various uses, and that it is intended to include such modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A form set including a plurality of superposed paper sheets with a carbon transfer sheet interleaved between each pair of adjacent paper sheets, means detachably securing said sheets together along one transverse edge thereof, each of the paper sheets having a line of weakness therein substantially parallel to the said transverse edge thereof thereby forming a removable stub portion at one end of each of the paper sheets, each of said paper sheets having a notch portion cut out from a longitudinal edge of the sheet inwardly thereof adjacent to said detachably secured edge portion, said notch being spaced from said edge portion a suflicient distance to provide a tab portion on each of the paper sheets between the said secured edge and said notch portion, the said notch portions and the said tab portions each lying in superposed relation. each of said carbon transfer sheets interleaved between the paper sheets having a notch portion cut out from a longitudinal edge of the sheet and inwardly of the carbon transfer sheet, said notches in the transfer sheets being in superposed relationship to each other and disposed in the carbon transfer sheets in an offset position with respect to said notch portions in said paper sheets, and wherein tab portions of the paper 6 sheets substantially cover the notch portions in said transfer sheets.
2. A form set including a plurality of superposed paper sheets with a carbon transfer sheet interleaved between each pair of adjacent paper sheets, means detachably securing said sheets together along one transverse edge thereof, each of the paper sheets having a line of weakness therein substantially parallel to the said transverse edge thereof thereby forming a removable stub portion at one end of each of the paper sheets, each of said paper sheets having a notch portion cut out from a longitudinal edge of the sheet inwardly thereof adjacent to said detachably secured edge portion, said notch being spaced from said edge portion a sufficient distance to provide a tab portion on each of the paper sheets between the said secured edge and said notch portion, the said notch portions and the said tab portions each lying in superposed relation, each of said carbon transfer sheets interleaved between the paper sheets having a notch portion cut out from a longitudinal edge of the sheet and inwardly of the carbon transfer sheet, said notches in the transfer sheets being in superposed relationship to each other and disposed in the carbon transfer sheets in an offset position with respect to said notch portions in said paper sheets, each of said carbon transfer sheets having an uppermost portion which is free of carbon for grasping and manipulating said carbon transfer sheet.
