To form a tight bottom for the ash compartment24, the flange I3 of the end -H' ofthe shell 1 is extended to the partitionZl. For sup porting the cigarettes in an upright position or one or: more packages thereof after tearingawaytheupper portion of the package in the central compartment 22 and: permitting ready access thereto when desired'is arranged a lift 36 which ing off ashes from a cigarette, and upon the closingof the cover 28 will toss the cigarette butt into the compartment 24.
The lift 35 for supporting the cigarettes is made of sheet metal and consists of a bottom plate 40 and upright side plates it-42 having their vertical edges bent outwardly and inwardly as at 43 i for slidably engaging the partitions and 2|,
and also providin a space 44 between said sides and said partitions. For actuating the lift 36 up and down by the opening andclosing respectively of the cover 26, a pair of lever arms 45 and 46 are 1 pivot'ally connected at il and 48 to the outside of theside plates 4| and142 of the lift and in the spaces Mbetweeu'samean'd the partitions 20 and '2|,'and the upper ends of said lever arms are I pivoted atfiQ and5ii to said cover. A spacing rod 7 5| extends from. side to side of the lift 36 at the upper rear corners, which rod also serves to hold the upper ends of the cigarettes away from the rear side of the case.
I The shelf or platform 3'! for supporting. the book packs of matches is also constructed of sheet metal and consists of abottom plate 52, an upright rear end or back plate 53 and a lower up- "right front end 54 which is bent horizontally forward to provide a ledge 55 at'a height above said bottom plate for a purposehereinafter explained.
Fixed to the rear side of the front end 54 at 56 and extending" above the back plate 53 is an upright'platei'l separating the shelf 31 into a front space 58 and a larger rear space 59. The front space 58 of the shelf is adapted to hold abook of matches for use and the rear. space'59 several books of matches in'reserve; The top edges of the back'plate 53 and the separatin plate 51 are curved rearwardly as indicated at 60 and Bi,
.and the height of the plate 5'! issufiicient to ac- 1 The shelf 3'! is fixedjto a slidable plate 62 having its vertical 1 edges bent outwardly at63 to'serve asguides in commodate a book-pack of matches.
the grooves 31 and 32 of the partition 20 and at the same time'provide' a space 64 for a lever arm "85,- which is fpivotally connected at 66 "to said plate andat 6'! to the cover 21. The raising of the cover Z'I'actuates the'slidable plate 62 upwardly which in turn'causes' the shelf 31 to move in'the 'same direction, 'thef'eby raising said shelf and the booksof matches thereon above the'top of the case for ready accessthereto and the book of matches in the front space 58 and on the elevated ledgeof the shelf 31 for convenient and 3 easy removal, and use in the. usual 1118111161301 to replace that packwhen used entirely by one from the reserve space 59. And the closing of the cover 21 causes the reverse movement of the'shelf 31 an'd theenclosing; thereof and the books of matches in the 'case.. "j V r I e The support or holder 38 for a burning cigarette consists of a trough shaped dish 68 having a downwardly turned leg- 69, which is pivotally connected'at 10 to the end of the compartment 24.
Formed integrally with the leg Sil'is 'a lug TI to which is pivoted at 12 a lever arm 13, the other I 7 end of which is pivoted at 'l l-to a lug 15 of a slid 4 able plate 16.' The plate 16 is similar to the plate 62, and its outwardly turned vertical edges 1! are adapted to slide in the grooves 3| and 32 of the partition 2| and provide a space at 18 between said plate and said partition. For actuating the plate 16 vertically by the movement of the cover 28, a lever arm 19 is pivotally connected at to said plate and its other end at 8| to said cover. The opening movement of the cover 28 moves the plate 16 upwardly and this in turn swings the dish 68 of the support or holder 38'up and outwardly or in the arc of a circle into a position for the placing of a burning cigarette thereon, and the closing of said cover, swings the dish downwardly and inwardly or on the reverse arc, thereby tilting said dish and causing a burning cigarette butt on the dish to fall therefrom into the compart- 7 ment 24. Said closing movement of the cover '28 7 also causes complete enclosure of the support or holder. The ashes and butts of cigarettes may be conveniently removed from the compartment 24 of the cabinet by opening its cover 28 and holding the'other covers-26 and 2'! closed in the palm of the hand while lifting the cabinet and turning it upside down and gently shaking same.
From the drawings and description, it is ap} parent that this smokers. 'cab-inetis suitablefor standing .ona desk or table, is compactand con- I venient in arrangement for holding and enclosing from view, the cigarettes and matches and ashes V 7 'or butts of cigarettesrin separate compartments but permitting ready access to either the-cigarettes or matches. when needed, or to the use of the ash receivingrcompartment, by the simple opening or closing of the compartmentcovers.
Also a support or holder for burning cigarettes or the butts of same is operated in and out'of the ash compartment of the cabinet in the same manner; And the inward movement of the support or holder will toss a cigarette butt therefrom 1 into the ashjcompartment. And the ashes and cigarette butts may be conveniently and quickly shaken out of the compartment without remov ing the cigarettesor matches from the cabinet.
