FILING DEVICE non TALKING-MACHINE anconns.
Application filed. Januar a9, 1921 Serial no; 440,934. I
, To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW L. Wins,
of Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful lmprove nient in Filing Devices for Talking-lVl-achiue Records, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to filing devices for storing phonograph records. 1
Generally stated, the object of the improvements constituting the present invention is to provide a novel and improved construction whereby the container for the pockets or envelopes in which the records are held is disposed in a horizontal plane, when pushed into the cabinet or the struc ture in which the containers are held, and wherebyeach of the containers thus stored in horizontal position can be pulled outwardly and caused to tilt downward into a vertical position, with the side of the container facing outward, and with the top of the container open and exposed to permit access to the upper edges of thepockets or envelopes and the records held therein, thus facilitating the selection of the desired record.
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction tending To these and other useful ends the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the forward portion of a cabinet containing the filing devices embodying the principles of the invention, and showing oneof said filing devices (one of the containers in which the pockets or envelopes are held) pulled outward and tilted into an upright position.
Figure 2 is a detail or fragmentary perspective view showing a portion of the slide upon which each container is mounted.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a suitable cabinet or housing 1 having an open front and provided with horizontally disposed partitions 2 which divide the front of the cabinet into elongated openings arranged one above the other. Each of said openings is provided at the sides thereof with slots or notches 3, and the sheet to increase the general efiiciency and the metal slides or rails 4: have upper flanges 5 which slide in these slots or notches when the containers 6 are pulled out, and when they areshoved back into the cabinet. For
each container 6, there are two of the rails or slides 4 (one a right and the other a left) and the two sheet metal slides thus provided are rigidlyconnected together by a cross bar 7 secured to the lower in-turned flanges 8 of said slides or rails inany suitable or desired manner. Preferably, as shown, the
sheet metal flanges 8 are provided with in" .tegral lugs 9 which are bent down upon the ends of the cross bar 7. The end por-' tions 10 of said slides are provided with notches 11 to receive the pivots 12 which are secured to the sides of the containers,
whereby the latter can be pulled out and then lifted off or disconnected from the ends of the slides, should it be desired, for example, to place the container on atable or other supportfor the inspection of the records. The inner ends: of the flanges 8 are each provided with a, down-turned end portion 18 whichcan engage someportion of the cabinet structure, in any suitable or desired manner, tolimit the outward movement of the slides, when the containeris pulled outward. The cross bar7 has an up standing portion 14 which extends upward in rear of the records, so that when the container is jerked or pulled out quickly the records will not slideout, the portion 14: forming a sort of stop or guard to preventsuch displacement of the records.
The container 6 may, of course, be of any suitable known or approved form,
may also be of any suitable or desired form or character and may be of the form shown in said prior application if so desired.
The pockets or envelopes 15 of each container In use, the container in which the desired record is stored is pulled outward until the stops 13 limit the outward movement, and the container is then allowed to tilt into the position shown in Figure 6 thus permitting access to the upper edges of the pockets or envelopes in which the records are held. As stated, if desired, the container can be lifted off, as the pivots 12 can be disengaged from the notches 11, by an upward movement therefrom, and the container can then be carried around or placed on the table. When i i it is desired to push the container back into the cabinet, the lower end of the container is swung outward and upward, until the container rests on the flanges 8 and is horizontal, and the said container and its slides are then forced horizontally into the opening allotted to the container. In this way, when the containers are all in the cabinet, the front of the cabinet is flush, each container being provided with a handle 16 by which to pull it outward.
It will also be seen that the ends 17 of the flanges 8 of the slides form stops to limit the outward or forward tilting motion of the container 6 when the latter is pulled out and allowed to tilt of its own accord into upright position, thus insuring the desired vertical position for the container and its contents. Thnsthe records or other articles filed in the containen are in horizontal planes when stored in the cabinet or housing and are in vertical transverse planes when pulled out and tilted into position for removal.
In other words, the records are disposed in horizontal planes, one above the other, in the cabinet or housing. When a container is pulled outward, and allowed to tilt into the position shown in Figure 1 of. the drawings,
the/records inthis container are then in vertical planes which extend parallel with the axis about which the container tilts and this axis extends arallel with the front of the housing or ca inet.
, What I claim as my invention is:
1 In a filing device, the combination of a housing, a rigid wall container open at its inner end only, slides extending under the L container and movable horizontally in said housing, and means for pivotally mounting the container on the outer end portions of said slides, sothat said container is movable about an axis which is fixed relatively to the container itself, and also relatively to said slides, whereby the container is first movable outwardly a distance with said slides and is then movable about its pivotal support to a vertical position to present said open end upward to permit access to the contents thereof, and the rear side, which is also the under side, of the container having engagement with said slides to limit both the upright tilting motion and also the return to horizontal position of said container, said housing having notches in which the slides are movable endwise, and said slides being made of sheet metal and formed with upper flanges to extend into said notches, and having lower flanges which limit the tilting motion of the container and which are provided with down-turned rear end portions forming stops to limit the outward movement of the slides.
2. ,In a filing device, the combination of a cabinet, sheet metal slides disposed in a 1101'- izontal plane within said cabinet, a receptacle pivoted upon and between the outer ends of said slides, to tilt about a transverse axis, and means to rigidly connect said slides, each slide comprising an upper outer flange and a lower inner flange, the cabinet having grooves forming guidesfor the upper flanges of the slides, the outer ends ofithe lower flanges. of the slides serving as stops to limit the tilting motion of said receptacle, and the inner ends of the lower flanges of the slides being formed to limit the outward sliding motion thereof in said grooves.
