DRIER AND FORMING DEVICE Filed Jan. 26, 1946 Patented Sept. 2, 1947 DRIER AND FORMNG DEVICE.

Application January 26, 1946, Serial No. 643,676
2 Claims. (Cl. 223-77) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in drier and forming devices. More particularly the invention relates to a drier and former for socks or stockings. As such, the invention has vfor its principal object the provision of an improved `construction of the character hereinafter described, which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the several objects of the invention is to provide a simple arrangement for extending the toe of the drier so as to accommodate socks of different lengths.
Another and equally important object of the invention is the provision of a drier having an adjustable toe portion together with means for readily and expeditiously adjusting the toe portion in a predetermined adjusted position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a sock or stocking drier and former formed substantially of an open, wire frame, thereby permitting the maximum circulation for drying purposes, with no large areas or other bulky portions interfering with circulation of air.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional detail view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional detail View taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The several objects of my invention are accomplished by the preferred form of construction as shown in the drawings. As an object of this invention is to provide a drier and former having the maximum of air circulation for drying purposes, we provide a drier and former frame il] formed substantially of wire bent in the form or configuration of a leg portion having a heel portion ll and aninstep portion I2. One of the wire frames I3 terminates at a point above a cross wire frame to provide an extension I5 curved to provide a hook I6 to facilitate hanging the frame from a stationary object during drying or forming of the sock or stocking thereon.
A toe portion is provided at Il and the major portion I 8 thereof is likewise formed of -a wire length with the end portions i9 extending into tubular extensions 2t provided as extensions of the end portions 2l of the side frame wire I3, as well as the side frame wire 22. The arrangement is such that the toe portion Il may be adjusted relative to the heel and instep portions whereby to accommodate stockings or socks of varying lengths. Means is provided for securing the toe portion in an adjusted position with respect to the end portions 2l, and this means includes a crossbar 23 extending from the heel portion il to the instep portion l2. Formed as an integral part of this crossbar, as at 2., is a bar 25. A similar bar 26 is formed as an integral part of the toe portion Il, as at 2l'. The bars 25 and 26 are disposed substantially in parallel relation with respect to each other and are adapted to be adjusted longitudinally with respect to each other. The bar 25 has a right angularly extending portion 28 looped as at 2S for slidable connection with the bar 2E. The bar 26 has secured thereto in any suitable manner a block 23', and this block 29 has an opening 3@ through which the bar 25 is slidably projected. The block 29 carries a set screw 3l which is adapted to be threaded into bearing engagement with the rod 25 whereby to releasably latch the rods 25 and 2S in an adjusted position and consequently releasably latch the toe portion Il in an adjusted position with respect to the end portions 2|. By this construction a very simple means is provided for adjusting the toe portion Il in a predetermined position with respect to the remaining portion of the drier frame, thereby to accommodate socks or stockings of various lengths.
From the description herein, it will be noted that there are no large solid areas obstructing air passage through the drier frame, and in this manner the stocking or sock mounted upon the drier frame may receive the full benet of air lcirculation during the drying process.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A drier frame comprising an open frame having a configuration of a leg and provided with a bar extending from the heel portion thereof to the instep portion thereof, and provided with tubular portions extending from said heel and instep portions, a substantially U-shaped frame providing a toe portion with the limb portions of the frame adapted to telescopically extend into said tubular portions, means for releasably latching the toe portion to said bar in a predetermined adjusted position with respect to said heel and instep portions, said means including a rod element carried by said bar and extending at right angles with respect thereto, and a second rod element carried by the toe portion and extending in parallel relation with respect to the lirstY rod element, means for adjustably connecting said rod elements together, said last-named means comprising a coupling including a loop` provided by one of said rod elements and having slidable connection with the other of the rod elements, a block carried by said other of the rod elements and adapted to have sli/dingl engagement with respect to said first rod element, and a set screw carried by said block for engagement with respect to said first mentioned rod element.
2; A drier frame comprising an open frame having a configuration of' a, leg and provided witha bar extending from the heel portion thereof to the instep portion thereof, a substantially U-shaped frame providing a toe portion with the limb portions thereof adapted for longitudinal adjustment with respect to parallelly extending portions provided by the heel and instep portions, means slidably connecting said limb portions to said: parallelly extending portions, and means for releasably latching the toe portion to said bar in a predetermined adjusted position with respect to said heel and instep portions, said means including a rod element carried by said bar and extending at right angles with respect thereto, and a second rod element carried by the toe portion and extending in parallel relation with respect to said rst rod element, means for adjustably connecting said rod elements together, said last-named means comprising a coupling including a, loop provided by one of said rod elements and having slidable connection with the other ofthe rod elements, a block carried by said other ofA the rod elements and adapted to have sliding engagement with respect to said rst rod element, and a set screw carried by said block .for bearing. engagement with respect to said iirst rod element.
