Application September 5, 1946, ASerial :190.5941989 This invention relates teadjustable forms or frames for'stretching and drying hosiery, and has particular reference to improvement of theutype 'f-deviedisclosed in U-SJBesigr-l Patent #-128,- 253, issued July 15, 1941, to John L. Devaney.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide simple and efficient means whereby the ankle portion of the form or frame may be readily adjusted to diiferent ankle sizes.
The present invention also contemplates certain novel features and structural details which will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of an adjustable hosiery form constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational view thereof looking toward the right of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a lower leg segment section having an ankle portion E and a heel portion 1, and a U-shaped partial foot section 8.
The lower leg segment section 5 comprises spaced front and rear rods 9 and I0 which are joined at their upper ends to provide a transverse top member II, The rods 9 and I0 terminate at their lower ends in forwardly directed or extended extensions I2 and I3, the rod I0 being formed to provide the heel portion 1.
The partial foot section comprises a toe member I 4 consisting of a U-shaped piece of Wire or rod having its ends fitted and secured in correspending ends of tubular members I5 constituting the end portions of the partial foot section. The tubular members I5 slidably receive the eX- tensions I2 and I3 whereby the partial foot section 8 may be adjusted to different foot length sizes.
A transverse brace I6 connects the rods 9 and II) at the ankle portion 6, and this brace is adjustable as to length for adjusting the rods 9 and I0 to different ankle sizes. As is shown, the brace I6 comprises a rearwardly projecting stub I'I formed on or welded to the rod 9, a tubular member I8 having the stub Il tted and welded or otherwise secured in one end thereof, and an elongated rod I9 formed on or welded at one end to the rod I0 in line with and projecting toward the stub I'I, the rod I9 being slidably and frictionally received in the tube I8. Suicient frictional engagement is provided between the tube '4 claims. As generally shown in the above mentioned design patent, means is provided for adjusting the partial foot section 8 from a point adjacent the top of the form or frames. This means comprises an adjusting rod 20 extending to a point above the top transverse member II and formed at its upper end t0 provide a hook 2| by means of which the form or frame may be suspended from an elevated supporting rod or the like. The lower end portion 22 of the rod 20 is directed forwardly and downwardly and Welded or otherwise attached as at 23 to the lower part of the toe member I4. The adjusting rod 20 is effectively guided by passing the same upwardly at one side of the brace I6 and at the opposite side of the transverse top member II, as Well as between the top member II and a laterally offset guiding cross piece 24 which connects the rods 9 and I0 a short distance below the transverse top member II. The usual scale strip 25 is disposed longitudinally of and attached along one edge to the portion of the rod 20 directly below the hook 2| so that the graduations of this scale plate may coact with either of the transverse members I I or 24 to facilitate accurate adjustment of the partial foot section 8 through the medium of the rod 29. Obviously, in order to effect this adjustment from a point at or adjacent the top of the form or frame, the rod 20 is simply moved upwardly or downwardly by using the hook 2| as a handle. It will thus be apparent that the adjustment of the partial foot section may be effected after initially placing the hose on the form or frame for being stretched and dried. While the adjustable brace I6 primarily effects adjustment as to ankle size, it also provides for lesser adjustment affecting the calf and foot length sizes.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction, manner of use and advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art. Minor changes in details of construction and certain modifications may be made and resorted to, such as fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. An adjustable hosiery form including a lower leg segment section having heel and ankle portions, and a U-shaped foot section, said lower leg segment section comprising front and rear rods joined at the upper ends to provide a transverse top member, said rods terminating at their lower ends in forwardly directed and converging extensions, said foot section having rearwardly diverging tubular end portions sldably receiving said extensions whereby the foot section may be adjusted to different foot length sizes, and a transverse brace connecting the rods at the ankle portion and adjustable as to length for adjusting the rods to dierent ankle sizes.
2. The construction dened in claim 1, wherein said transverse brace comprises a tubular mem ber attached at one end to one of said rods, and an elongated rod member attached at one end to the other of said rods and slidabiy frictionally telescoped into said tubular member, the` frictional engagement between the rod member and the tubular member being suicent to maintain adjustments of the transverse brace with the ankle portions of a hose in properly stretched condition upon the form.
