Description
Aug. 26, 1947. D, OWEN 2,426,282
. GARMENT Filed Aug 26 1944 v INVENTOR.
DOROTHY OWEN BY 4. AITrO/HWEK Patented Aug. 26, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in garments, and more particularly to a novel infants garment.
An object of the invention is to so construct a garment of the type that the neck line thereof can readily be enlarged to provide an appropriate fit conforming to the growth of an infant wearer thereof.
A further object of the invention is to construct an enlargeable neck line with an extremely simple means for letting out the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide means in a device of the type which will make possible absolute uniformity in the several points of the enlarging means thereof.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a garment embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a'plan view in elevation of the top of said garment.
Fig. 3 is a detail of a stitch which may be employed.
Fig. 4 is a detail of another stitch.
Fig. 5 is a detail of another type of stitching.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral applies to the garment generally, which in the particular form shown in Fig. 1, is fastened by a single button I I. It will be apparent that the bottom l2, the adjacent frontal edges I3 and I4, and the sleeve ends I5 and I6, as well as the lapels I! and I8 are all formed with a so-called picot edge, whichis made by cutting the connecting stitches of a single row of conventional hemstitching. Centrally of the back panel IQ of the garment at the top thereof, a plurality of the hemstitches 20, have been allowed to remain uncut, and'also, centrally along the shoulder line, at 2| and 22, pluralities of like hemstitches have been allowed to remain intact. In the use of the invention as an infants garment, it will readily be understood, that upon the growth of the child, the neck opening 23 may readily be-enlarged by cutting one or more of the innermost connecting stitches of the hemstitches 20, 2| and 22. A comfortable fit may in this way be insured at all times.
In Fig. 2, a plan view discloses the rear lapels 23 and 24 as shown, and these also are rovided with the picot edge. On the other parts of the garment l0, various other embellishments, such as embroidery may be had.
In Fig. 3 is illustrated another stitch obtained by three adjacent and parallel rows of hemstitching. With this stitch, similar effect may be obtained in a garment 30, by severing the central connectin threads of the triple hemstitching 3|.
In Fig. 4, the drawing shows a form of spaced hemstitching 4D in a garment 4|, which may be similarly treated.
In Fig, 5, a diagrammatic loop stitch is indicated in a garment 50, and in this form the stitches 5! may be severed in the central portion thereof.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, Without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A device of the character described which is hemstitched vertically medially of the entire front panel thereof, and along the shoulder line centrally for a portion of its width, and a length of hemstitching at right angles to and extending rearwardly downwardly from the shoulder line stitch, the said stitches being cut to leave an opening centrally of the front panel and some of the shoulder and rearwardly disposed stitches being cut to form a collar portion,
2. The method of sewing a blank for a garment which includes hemstitching vertically centrally from the lower front edge to a point in the back thereof rearwardly of the shoulder line, and like stitching along a portion of the shoulder line centrally thereof, and cutting said stitches to form lapels and a collar opening and a vertical frontal opening in said garment.
3. A device of the character described which is hemstitched vertically medially of the entire front panel thereof, and along the shoulder line centrally thereof for a portion of its width, and a length of hemstitching at right angles to and extending rearwardly downwardly from the shoulder line stitch, some of the rear and shoulder stitches being cut to leave a, picot edge neck opening of a given size, all of the front panel stitches being cut to form vertical picot edges, and whereby additional of the shoulder line and rear stitches may be cut progressively at intervals of time to enlarge the neck size as for a growing infant.
