GARMENT SUPPORT Robert S. P'ankowski, La Porte, Ind.
Application February 15, 1946; SerialNo. 6473816 1 Claim. 1
The instant invention. relatesto garment sup ports, particularly for womens clothes and its primary object is the provision of a support for a coat and including clip means adapted. for supporting a skirt being only folded at the side seams.
Another object of the invention is a garment support of the class characterized the clip of which may be opened after asuspendingmeans has been swung toa predetermined position.
Another object is the provision of a garment support of simple, durable and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides in the novelty of construction, combination and arrangement of parts specifically described and distinctly claimed in the subjoined claim.
The description should be read in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of the application, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a reduced top plan view.
Figure 3 is a front view.
In the drawing, in which like characters of reference designate like or similar parts, numeral 2 denotes generally a body member preferably made of sheet metal or plastic and including an intermediate section 3 forming a channel opening downwardly and having a bight part, the exterior surface of which is convex longitudinally and transversely.
The outer sections 5 are likewise convex on their exterior surfaces and in both directions named, and are of a greater width approximating that of the average pads in garments to be supported thereby.
The intermediate section has in its bight portion an intermediate longitudinal slot 1 for a hook 2 including a fragmentary annular part 9 and a straight stem ll) extending from the lower end of the former and a substantially sectoral part I I joined to the lower part of the stem.
From the right-hand end of the sectoral part extends a circular finger l2 spaced at its upper edge from the lower circular edge of the sector and defining therewith. a slot. The upper edge of the finger has an intermediate notch.
The same is adapted to receive a teat or proect on l3 formed upon the lower face and near the inner edge of tongue l4 extending substantially at right angles from a part l5 joined to the upper edge and to the intermediate point of a movable clip member l! which has a length 2 about equal tothat of the intermediate sectionand bulges outwardly at its intermediate portion and is provided with a lower rolled or beadeded'ge- [-82 The same may be covered with felt or soft rubber to prevent marking the garment to be held. 7
The upper edge of member M has two spaced hinge barrel portions or loops 20 each interlinking through a slot 2 I with the channel wall of the intermediate section. Intermediate of the loops 20 and nearer to the bight part of the intermediate section the channel walls are provided with registering apertures for a rivet 23 serving as a fulcrum for the hook and passing through a hole therein.
The rear channel wall or the wall parallel to the wall carrying the movable clip member, has a lower portion 25 forming the fixed clip member of a shape similar to the shape of the movable clip member, and having a lower beaded or rolled edge l8 like that of the movable clip member.
The support described and shown comprises only four parts. The intermediate and outer sections can support a coat in its natural shape. since the shoulder contour of the sections named conform to the structure of the body. Thus distortion of the hanging garment is prevented. The rounded outer sections prevent unsightly bulges formed by conventional hangers. Sweaters and woolen garments may be held by the hanger without the danger of the formation of so-called Wings on the shoulders.
The full width of the outer sections is a necessity for any dress 01' sport coat with built-in shoulder pads. The conventional hanger fails to support the pads, causing them to assume a fold leading to an eventual breakdown of the padding. Pads supported by conventional hangers are liable to slip off and create bulges.
My garment support overcomes these defects. The full-length skirt clip will grip a skirt that is only folded at the sideseams and has a thirtyinch waist measurement, when the hook is in the full line position of Figure 3 and the inner concave edge of the finger bears against the underside of the tongue. When the hook is swung to the dotted line position of Figure 3, the outer edge of the sectoral portion bears against the upper side of the tongue and moves the rolled edge of the movable clip member away from the corresponding edge of the fixed clip part so that the garment clamped therein is released. When the hook is in the full-line position of Figure 3, it is held against wobbling in the support by the engagement of the projection l3 in the notch formed in the upper edge of the finger [2, even if the weight of the garment is not uniformly supported over the support.
The garment support primarily designed for womens clothes is also adaptable to the needs for correct hanging of mens garments.
The finger, sector and tongue are enclosed and thus pinching of the material or of the fingers of the operator is prevented.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangementof parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
In a garment hanger having the usual centrally disposed hook with outwardly extending and downwardly sloping arms, the combination, which comprises a bar with downwardly curved ends of comparatively thin material in the shape of an inverted U in cross-section having downwardly extending arms and with the edges of the ends extended outward providing cushion-shaped shoulder-retaining elements for garments, one of said arms carrying an extending outwardly bowed jaw section of a gripping clip suspended below the bar, said outwardly bowed jaw section integral with the arm from which it is suspended, a complementary outwardly bowed jaw section extending downward-from the other of said arms, means hinging said complementary jaw section to the lower edge of the arm from which it extends, said complementary jaw section carrying a horizontally disposed tongue extending from a point intermediate the ends thereof across the central portion of said inverted U-shaped bar, the lower end of said hook carrying a depending jaw below a, transverse horizontally positioned slot, and a pin extending through the arms of said inverted U'-shaped bar and through the hook pivotally mounting the hook in the bar wherein actuation of the hook to the upright position forces said depending law under the tongue holding the tongue with the complementary jaw in gripping relation with the jaw integral with the arm of the inverted U-shaped bar.
