, f 50am. (01; 223-91) Y I This-invention relates to novel and useful improvements in clothes hangers and more explicitly pertains to a hanger for supporting both coats and trousers.
Primary objects of my invention reside in forming a clothes hanger which is adapted to securely support in a neat and compact manner a coat or the like and one or more pairs of trousers without wrinkling.
Additional important objects of my device are to provide a clothes hanger with securing means for supporting trousers, which may be readily engaged or released therefrom and which means are of simple construction, dependable operation, attractive in appearance and are economical to manufacture.
These, together with numerous ancillary objects which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by my device, one embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only,,in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device;
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section being taken substantially upon the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional detail view showing the construction of the fastening means and is taken substantially'uponthe line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a detail view, in vertical section, being taken substantially upon the line 4-4 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a detail in end elevation illustrating the use of the holder with a pair of trousers.
As shown in the attached drawings, my device is indicated generally at In and comprises a base member l2 which may be formed of any suitable material of a flexible or resilient nature, such as plastic, metal, plywood or the like and is provided with the customary supporting hook or hanger M. The base member I2 is given the usual configuration to enable it to properly support without wrinkling a coat or the like. To the rear of the base portion is secured an arm l6 having an outwardly and a downwardly extending portion constituting an extension member. Adjacent the lower surface of the base l2 and on the same side thereof as the arm I6, is disposed a horizontal strip l8 forming a shoulder which as shown in Figures 2 and 5 is positioned slightly below the extremity of the arm l6. Upon the extremity of arm I5, is pivoted as by hinge 20 and bifurcations 2 I, a, trouser retaining means 22 in the form of an elongated strip which is of suflicient length to normally seat upon the strip Hi When in its lowered position but to provide clearance between the ends of its self and the back of the base member [2. This proportioning of parts is clearly indicated in Figures 2 and 5. As shown best in Figures 2 and 5, the horizontal strip IB is smoothly contoured to engage the rounded end of the fastener 22. As shown in Figure 3, the central portion of the adjacent edges of members l8 and 22 are recessed or notched at 24 and 26 respectively to provide a groove for receiving the bulging seam of trousers when placed in the holder. The lower portion of the base I2 and arm I6 are resilient to allow for the increased thickness of a plurality of trousers ,therebetween, but the upper edge of the back is provided with a lateral flange or rib' 28 to reinforce the back and prevent bending thereof. From the foregoing, the operation of the trouser fastener will now be apparent. Either one, or a plurality of pairs of trousers are disposed in hanging relation, with their cuff portions or lower ends disposed adjacent and against the surface of the base member l2, with their seams seated in the notches 24 and 26, and a fold thereof supported upon a strip l8 and depending downwardly therefrom as indicated at 30. When so positioned, the raised member 22 is lowered and seats upon the top surface of the strip l8 and the trousers disposed thereon, while the end of the strip 22 wedges the upwardly extending cuffs or end portions of the trousers between itself and the back of the base strip 12.
It will be apparent that in operation, the fastening means 22 may be readily manipulated as by pushing thereagainst with the ends of the trousers in order to insert the same into the space provided therefor, while the weight of the strip, the flexibility of arm l6 and back [2, as well as the weight of the trousers assist in retaining the clothing in securely fastened position in the device.
I wish it to be clearly understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described in the drawings and specification,
' but that I may avail myself of any modifications falling within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A clothes hanger consisting of a base member contoured to support a coat, an arm member depending from said base and spaced laterally therefrom, a shoulder secured to one of said members and. extending laterally therefrom into the space between said members, a wedge fastener of a length less than the distance between said members and pivoted to the other ber of unitary panel material contoured to sup- 5 port a coat and having a downward extension member, an arm member depending from said base member and disposed in laterally spaced relation to said extension member, said arm member extending=outwardly and downwardly from 10 said base'*n'1ember, a'sh'oulder secured to one of said members and extending laterally into the space between said members, a wedge fastener of a length less than the distance between-:said
arm member and said extension and pivoted to 15 the other member for positioning iiito overlying proximity to said shoulder. I V I 3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said wedge fastener is notched to accommodate the longitudinal seams of trousers.
+4. 'I he eombination of claim e. 1 awherein' 1 said 4 arm member has a transverse hinge pin, said wedge having furcations journaled on said hinge pin and embracing said arm member.
5. The combination of claim 1 wherein the adjacent edges of said wedge fastener and said shoulder are substantially coextensive, and the outer edge of said wedge fastener tapers in length from that of the arm member to that of the shoulder.
